‘Favourite’ is a word that is thrown about a lot. Everywhere claims to be a ‘London favourite’ but few places actually live up to the hype. However, Bocca di Lupo is not one of those places. A Soho institution, the Italian restaurant has earned the ‘favourite’ and has been loved by critics and diners alike from its opening in 2008. Famed for its feel-good atmosphere and regional Italian food, the popular trattoria is introducing ‘In Viaggio’, a phrase meaning ‘to travel’, a series of month-long regional takeovers, which will delve deeper into the varied cuisine, produce and techniques that span the country.
Bocca di Lupo will overhaul its set menus to offer a variety of dishes that celebrate the region, kicking off the regional series with February’s Valtellina Ski menu. Jacob Kenedy, co-owner and Chef learnt to ski in Valtellina himself, and takes inspiration from the hearty, indulgent food served on the Lombardy slopes. Kenedy’s menu offers dishes perfect for the winter months and typical of the mountainous area, including salty beef of Bresola Valtellinese served with caprino (fresh goats cheese) and Pizzoccheri (buckwheat flat noodles) with bitto cheese, cabbage, sage and potato. An integral part of any menu served in Lombardy, Bocca di Lupo offers an authentic, comforting stew for February’s bitter cold; dwarf deer marinated and stewed in red wine, spices and a touch of chocolate. If you, like us, believe that boozy desserts are a staple of the winter months, Kenedy’s wild blueberry and ricotta layer cake doused in barrel- aged Muscat grappa will certainly hit the spot.
As an addition to Bocca di Lupo’s celebrated atmosphere, Sundays throughout the month will see the private dining room opened up, and transformed into a convivial feasting den, with the region’s tasting menu, banquet-style sharing tables, and informed guides to the food and wine to create the warm vibes of a Valtellinese ski-lodge. We’d love to snuggle up on the slopes, without ever having to leave London of course.
Valtellina Ski Menu is available at Bocca di Lupo from the 1-28 February 2017, with other ‘In Viaggio’ takeover menus scheduled for June and October 2017.
