LASSCO Bar and Dining Opens on Maltby Street

An architectural salvage warehouse may not be the obvious choice for a restaurant but LASSCO bar & dining don’t want to go with the crowd. Tucked away just off Maltby Street (home to our favourite foodie market), the venue is no stranger to food, having previously hosted a handful of fairy lit supper clubs, but is now shifting permanently to restaurant/bar status as friends and business partners Jerome Slesinski and James Knox Boothman move in.

The duo met back in 2009 whilst working at the Royal Oak on Columbia Road Flower Market and will bring the same easy-going dining experience to a slightly unexpected setting. Jerome will take up the role of bar manager whilst James will step up as chef, working together to create a menu where drinks play equal importance to food (Jerome originally trained as a chef); you’ll find craft beers, natural wines and a concise selection of signature cocktails including the Maltby Mary – a vegan take on the classic made with pickled walnuts, horseradish loveage, cornichons and red wine – with the classics available on request.

The kitchen will become known for its great value 2 and 3 course prix fixe menu (£25 and £30 respectively), made up of dishes like duck prosciutto with blood orange, orange blossom and nasturtium seeds, and Cornish lemon sole with dukkah crab croquettes, minted yogurt and dill oil. Pudding will be equally imaginative; salted flourless chocolate cake with olive oil ice cream or forced rhubarb jelly, calvados custard and cobnut cream are available in addition to British and Irish cheeses. The whole experience is refined yet relaxed, impressive yet unassuming with an emphasis on quality ingredients. The venue itself shares this passion for originality – you’ll dine surrounded by antique furniture, handmade crockery and reclaimed wood, with the bar itself made from salvaged teak. There’s even an Eisenhower Room, featuring original panels from London’s US Naval Headquarters where General Eisenhower spent time during World War 2!
