The Handbook

It started with King’s Cross, then it was Victoria’s turn to take the foodie baton but the next big area to keep an eye on is Tower Bridge.

A huge multi-million pound renovation of the area is bringing with it luxury apartments on the banks of the Thames… and we’re talking serious luxury. Residents will enjoy perks akin to any 5-star hotel; think 24-hour Harrods concierge, a 20m swimming pool with white gold tiles, virtual golf and a luxurious spa treatment room, but what about food? Who really wants to come home and cook after a long day of business? Exactly, so it’s just as well that One Tower Bridge will boast a collection of big names as well as new names on the London restaurant scene.

The Ivy are the latest to announce their involvement, in the form of The Ivy Brasserie One Tower Bridge. Expect the familiar Ivy Brasserie formula of relaxed all-day dining like sister sites in Kensington, Soho, Covent Garden and Chelsea – this is the first of their Brasseries to jump south of the river and will open in July. 2011 Masterchef: The Professionals contestant, Tom Simmons, will be opening his self-titled debut restaurant in April. Tom Simmons is a 52-covers, serving British/French cuisine across brunch, lunch and dinner, with a nod towards his Welsh heritage. We’ve seen what he’s capable of on TV so this is definitely one to get excited about.

There’s apparently no stopping Rosa’s Thai who, fresh from opening in Brixton, will be opening their doors at Tower Bridge later in the year. Similarly, Brighton steakhouse The Coal Shed will be heading to London after six successful years in the south of England serving all things grilled.

The area will also be a new cultural hub, with the addition of a 900-seat theatre and 5-star, 70-bedroom boutique hotel, The LaLIT (read about it here) which boasts the same interior designer as Chiltern Firehouse and 30-foot ceilings in the top floor bedrooms. An award-winning spa completes the luxurious experience.

Ok so we may not be moving permanently to SE1 but we’ll be a regular in the restaurants…

The restaurants at One Tower Bridge open from April right through the summer. Visit individual websites for details.
