Q: What do you get when you bring together the 9th Best Bar in the World and London’s most impressive view?
A: Star bartenders from award-winning Athens bar The Clumsies taking over the bar at Shangri-La Hotel’s GŌNG in The Shard for four short nights.
Let’s start at the beginning. GŌNG is the sultry, sexy bar on level 52 of The Shard, inside the luxury 5-star Shangri-La Hotel. They’ve just announced a series of ‘Star Bartenders’ to take charge of the drinks for a few days at a time, and are turning to the team from Athens bar, The Clumsies (great name) to get things off to a flying start. Vasilis Kyritsis and Nikos Bakoulis will arrive fresh from Greece and shake up cocktails from their own Genesis menu as well as new creations thought up especially for the occasion alongside GŌNG’s resident bartenders, Fabio Dal Bosco and Christian Maspes. The menu is concise and confident, with a few surprise ingredients like baby rocket and clarified tomato water thrown in. Try the bright and refreshing GŌNG Collins; aged rum, fresh lemon juice, salty honey, apple soda and cucumber bitters. A sour yet sweet Trilogy is from the guys’ Genesis menu; London dry gin, mint and the intriguing sounding ‘triangle potion’.
GŌNG is the highest bar in London so a cocktail here is a pretty special experience on its own, overlooking the Thames, Tower Bridge and The Gherkin – all the best landmarks basically. After The Clumsies leave town (they’re here from Wednesday 22nd – Saturday 25th March) the bar will see fleeting visits from other international bartenders including ex-marine turned bartender extraordinaire, Steve Schneider who has just opened his debut bar, Employees Only in Singapore.
