Berkeley tea

Have you cracked your Spring/Summer 2017 wardrobe yet? Us neither. In fact, we could barely even decide what to wear today. One thing we do know for sure though, is that fashion in edible form is right up our street.

Luxury London hotel, The Berkeley last year celebrated a decade of their iconic fashionista afternoon tea, keeping it suitably up to date with a shake up every six months. If they didn’t we’d still all be eating babydoll dresses and cowboy boots (see Sienna Miller circa 2006)…

The hotel’s pastry chef, Mourad Khiat, has turned to some of the most influential fashion designers in the world for inspiration. Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci and Stella McCartney are just some of the designers who have received stunning makeovers in the form of classic desserts. Each creation reflects the signature styles and colours of the designers, making up an impressive display of mousses, cakes and biscuits all served on a tiered cake stand. Trends seen on the catwalks back in September have made their way into the tea in the form of a Gianduja chocolate mousse garnished with an individual farfalle pasta bow (Dolce & Gabbana) and a chequered chocolate and vanilla Battenburg cake inspired by Stella McCartney’s covetable chequerboard summer pumps. More ‘out there’ sartorial statements include Emilio Pucci’s playful colour-blocked jumpsuit reimagined as a caramelised pineapple compote with coconut jelly, strawberry bavarois and colourful chocolate wave and Gucci’s perfectly pink Breton jumper in rhubarb mousse form.

Tea, sandwiches and canapés are all included too but the cakes are definitely the star of the show. We would say it’s almost too pretty to eat, but once your photos are taken we guarantee you’ll be tucking right in…

Prêt-à-Portea is served at The Berkeley every day from 1.30-5.30pm
