Mayfair’s New Ice Cream Pop-up

There was once a time when we were satisfied by the classic ice cream flavours; the chocolates, the strawberries and, if we were feeling particularly wild, maybe a Neapolitan. Just like all good things, our tastes have changed and we’re looking for something with more je ne sais quois. Step in Italian restaurant Mercante. They’ve teamed up with artisan gelato makers La Gelatiera to bring a pop-up retro gelato cart to their terrace throughout the summer, as well as serving a 3-course ice cream pairing menu. Hurrah!

With more flavours released throughout the summer, you’ll find the likes of honey, rosemary and orange zest; pear and ricotta, bread and Nutella; boozy peach and amaretto and a Sicilian pistachio sorbet. There’ll also be savoury offerings (ice cream is done with always being put in the sweet category), there’ll be the likes of basil and chilli and Cornish blue with walnuts.

On the three-course pairing menu, the team will be bringing unusual food combinations together, (rather like we do when we’ve had one too many and suddenly Marmite and cream is a match made in heaven, except theirs has much more finesse and will actually taste delicious) like a Panzanella salad with extra virgin olive oil ice cream and Red Poll beef tartare with Applewood ice cream.

Now if the sun can just show up, then we’d be sorted.

Mercante’s Ice Cream Cart and the La Gelateria x Mercante Menu is available May – September
