This month, Jason Atherton’s Michelin-starred restaurant and bar, City Social, is set to revolutionise the way we consume cocktails with the launch of MIRAGE, the world’s first augmented reality cocktail menu.
Everyone remembers how Pokemon Go had everyone hooked last summer looking for imaginary creatures in their local parks and shopping centres. Love it or hate it, the ingenious app has been given the ultimate make over in the most grown up way possible.
For the past 18 months, two of the most prominent names in the bar industry, The Social Company’s group bar executive Jamie Jones and City Social’s bar manager Tim Laferla have been devising a new app which infuses virtual reality and cocktails and is set to change the way we consume our favourite drinks.
Consisting of 12 cocktails, Jason Atherton’s Michelin-starred restaurant and bar City Social is set to launch MIRAGE later this month. Before being served, guests are asked to download the app created by Mustard Designs. Upon receiving what appears to be your typical drink, simply open the app, point the camera at the glass and watch your cocktail become an interactive piece of art.
The menu’s theme has been inspired by ‘art through the ages’ and classic artwork by Vincent Van Gough, Banksy and Andy Warhol are set to feature. Despite MIRAGE’s menu being a kept closely guarded secret, City Social has exclusively revealed the names and spirits which make up three of their distinctive cocktails, Dogstone Brew, Sashay and Wheatfields With Fizz.
Dogstone Brew blends Hendrick’s Gin, port, bergamot, black tea split milk and orchid root to create a clarified milk punch cocktail with floral notes and a long finish. Victoriana-style balloons and Monty Python-esque imagery accompany this Victorian-inspired concoction. The Champagne-based Sashay eludes the Art Nouveau era. Blending Perrier Jouët Belle Époque Champagne, Japanese plum wine, jasmine and liquorice, featuring a beautiful woman reclining on a chaise longue. Wheatfields With Fizz celebrates Van Gogh’s colourful paintings including ‘Starry Night’, ‘Wheatfields with Crows’ and ‘View of Arles’. The cocktail’s ingredients include mix of a Ketel One Vodka, elderflower, bee pollen, lager and egg white.
Guests are also able to save and share images and videos of their unique concoctions on social media, which is sure to leave many people thirsty to try. Time to clear some space on your phone…
