We need constants in life, like The Archers, or gravity (famously two very similar scientific concepts), we like to know that things are always going to be there. So when Club Gascon closed its doors the other month our world rocked, until we realised it was just undergoing a refurb. And now it’s back, the Michelin starred stalwart of the London restaurant scene, going strong since 1999 and with a new and fabulous look, opened again last night.
The restaurant was originally launched by Pascal Aussignac and business partner and chef Vincent Labeyrie nearly 20 years ago and occupies a Grade II listed former Lyon’s Tea House. Redesigned in partnership with Sophie Douglas from Fusion DNA (they’ve also worked on Comptoir Gascon, Cigalon and Le Bar) the renovation has led to a dramatic extension of the kitchen and the freedom to open up the basement area of the restaurant. The new dining room includes a semi-private space to accommodate up to 10 guests and the restaurant itself maintains the elegant fine-dining environment we know and trust while incorporating a dramatically different, contemporary, look and feel.
It’s not just the surroundings, the Club Gascon kitchen has clearly used their downtime producitively, coming up with a new menu format altogether. Diners can start at Le Bar next door, enjoying hand-crafted cocktails and French tapas before moving on to eat at Club Gascon where the changes are exciting. Still driven by the restaurant’s signature style of South Western French cuisine, the à la carte menu will now be presented in a triptych format, separated into the past, present and future of Club Gascon. Past will include Aussignac’s classic dishes, albeit with a newly modern approach, while present will showcase seasonal food. Future will look at Aussignac’s sense of where eating will go over the next few years and as such will be focused on vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free dishes.
They may have spent the last two decades on the London restaurant scene, but it’s clear that Club Gascon is only getting started.
Club Gascon reopened Tuesday 24th October
