Get your diaries out and make sure you’ve blocked out April to June; it’s Jersey potato season. Of course, you’ve probably already got it noted in, in pen and everything, but just in case you’d forgotten.
The Jersey Royal is one of the world’s most venerable potato varieties, in fact it’s 140 years old this year, and to celebrate the arrival of its very short April to June season Michelin-starred Jersey chef Mark Jordan is to set up his own market stall at Maltby Street Market flogging freshly dug Jersey Royals.
And he’s also running a supper club to celebrate these terrific tubers, hailed as ‘the Champagne of the potato world’. Based out of Maltby Street’s Lassco Bar & Dining, the dinner will be a candlelight vigil for the toast of ‘taters.
Served just as they should be, within hours of being uprooted and presented simply with Jersey butter and Jersey sea salt, Jordan’s supper club will serve a four-course potato menu including include potato cappuccino, roasted Jersey scallops with potato and celeriac espuma and poached Jersey lobster. All presented alongside perfect drinks parings.
