Why is it, that we love music and we love reading, but poetry which is the stepping stone between the two just doesn’t seem to appeal so much? Maybe because it conjures up memories of rote learning Wordsworth in the class room, the whole room monotonously wandering lonely as a cloud. And even now we can’t remember the whole verse yet play us a song we last heard in 1996 we’ll know it perfectly. We bet then, that you didn’t know that today (21st March) is World Poetry Day and that if you write a poem today you can get free coffee.

Coffee roaster Julius Meinl have teamed up with critically acclaimed musician, JP Cooper as part of the fifth annual Pay With a Poem initiative. The singer will be creating a song to celebrate poets from around the world in a bid to show how music can be a gateway to enjoying poetry.  Then all you have to do is get creative, whether you write a haiku, a limerick, a ballade, an ode or even a cinquain it doesn’t matter, just write a poem and head over to one of the participating coffee shops for a free coffee or tea. If coffee isn’t your thing, but JP Cooper is, then you can also upload your poem on the Pay With a Poem site for the chance to win tickets and a trip to one of his shows.

Who knows, maybe 2018 will be the year you appreciate poetry.

Pay with a Poem takes place on the 21st March 2018
