I received my first invite to a Christmas event from a PR this week. It’s not that I’m not already in a Christmassy mood, given the weather sitch right now I feel I may as well be about to don bobblehat and mittens and head out ‘a-wassailing’, but still it’s a bit premature, right? I’m starting to feel the same way about all the summer emails popping into my inbox right now, ‘Celebrate the start of summer this’ and ‘Spring has sprung that’ when I’m still sat here, hugging the radiator by my desk and congratulating myself for wearing my thermals. However, I’ll make an exception for The Sanderson. Partly because they’ve got flamingos and Laurent Perrier Champagne, but mainly because this actually looks like a great way to pretend that summer really is en route.
So, here’s what they’ve got going down…
The boutique Fitzrovia hotel have decided to put their central courtyard to use by converting it into an Alice In Wonderland themed oasis. To achieve this Lewis Carroll medley, they’ve recruited over 50 fully-sized plastic flamingos, to evoke Alice’s famous croquet match, the seated swing has been retooled as The Queen Of Hearts’ throne, and, centre stage, will be an afternoon tea that would befit all you real-life Mad Hatters.
Sitting down to eat you’ll be greeted with a menu hidden inside a vintage book and encounter sandwich plates feature actual ticking clocks. The tea is packed with classics, but with Alice-like twists, like Tweedle Dee’s lemon curd financier and Alice’s cinnamon, apple and peach ‘Drink Me’ potion. As well as the clotted cream and jams you’d expect, sip a selection of Alice-inspired tea infusions. And because we’re all about the Champagne, there’s a Mad Hatters Cuvée Rosé Tea will includng the Pink Floquet Cake – a strawberry flamingo with a white chocolate Laurent-Perrier Cuvée Rosé croquet truffle.
All the fun is ultimately to mark the 50th Anniversary of Laurent-Perrier Cuvée Rosé, and the Champagne house is celebrating the only way it knows how – with lashings of drinks and an excellent spread of food. But there’s also a serious point, to raise money for m2m, an Africa-based, global NGO working to help families and promote health issues, empowering mothers and helping fund inexpensive but life-changing medical interventions.
The Sanderson: The tea launches on Wednesday 2nd May and will be available at The Sanderson, 50 Berners St, Fitzrovia, W1T 3NG, www.morganshotelgroup.com
