Canary Wharf, a let-down in many ways, not least the fact that I’ve never seen a single canary there, even on the DLR. Perhaps they’ve got a cat problem. But finally there’s a reason for cheer in the in the land of drab skyscrapers, a sweetshop inspired gin terrace is coming.
Plateau Restaurant, in Canada Place, have partnered with ginoisseurs Sipsmith to come up with a gin terrace guaranteed to bring a smile to the face of even the most hardened emerging markets trader. Located on the 4th floor, the terrace sees The Sipsmith Team infusing six unique gins, using their classic London Dry Gin as the base for an entire menu. What’s more, anyone who ever got overexcited by sweetshops (so basically everyone) will be thrilled to hear that the terrace is inspired by the traditional sweet shop. Show me the gobstoppers.
Taking ginspiration (I know, I know) from those big jars of sweets you see in old school sweet shops and Roald Dahl stories the six flavours on offer all follow a sweet shop theme. So there’s strawberries and cream, lemon drizzle, apple sours, liquorice all sorts, cherry drops and, Edmund’s favourite, Turkish delight. The flavoured gins all use Sipsmith London Dry and are blended by the Plateau’s mixologists.
The terrace itself will aim to extend the summer, meaning that however overcast it gets a little piece of Canary Wharf will at least remain untouched by winter’s icy claw. So as well as a wooden palette bar that’ll bring back festival vibes expect deck chairs and cushions, plus a bunch of the sort of stuff folks associate with gardens, like astro turf (sort of), chalkboards (ish), flowers (obv) and ‘gin balloons’ (unclear).
So get ginspired and into the garden (terrace) this September.
