This month is Totally Thames, the annual celebration of the River Thames and we have the perfect way to spend the afternoon whether you’ve been messing about in boats or not: The Thames inspired afternoon tea at The Petersham.
The traditional tea starts with the likes of Scottish smoked salmon, cream cheese and chive sandwich and scones with West Country clotted cream and strawberry jam before continuing with Thames-inspired pastries. They have of course been inspired by the likes of boats which are reimagined as a lemon curd tartelette and driftwood which you’ll find as a Gâteau Opéra, rather than what I use to see at high tide when I was rowing: random electrical appliances, animals and strangely when the new £5 note came in, old notes. Elsewhere on the menu there are bubble-gum and raspberry macaroons, fruit cake and blackcurrant and crème ‘river’ sponge.
Whether you choose to walk along the Thames after to walk it all off, or just sit back with a glass of Champagne after and admire its view, is up to you.
The Thames inspired afternoon tea is served at The Petersham, Nightingale Lane, Richmond, Surrey, TW10 6UZ throughout September
