The Handbook

Taste comes in various forms, saying ‘sofa’ instead of ‘settee’, knowing how to use a fish knife or which direction the Waitrose CCTV cameras are pointing so you can shoplift avocados, but the real mark of taste is whether you’ve got your tickets for Taste of London yet. And if you’ve not, get off your settee now.

Taste of London is a five day festival, taking over Regent’s Park and devoted to food; it’s big, it’s fun and it’s properly foodie. This year’s theme is ‘Wild in the City’, a massive celebration of sustainability and championing craftsmanship in food, drink as well as music and atmosphere. The event will bring together a veritable Who’s-Who of the UK restaurant and food industry, including winners and judges from the first World Restaurant Awards, hot from Paris, rubbing shoulders with foodie luminaries like chefs Kobus van der Merwe and River Cottage’s Steven Lamb. And, of course, you.

For his part, Lamb will be hosting masterclasses in a transformed shepherd’s hut (Wild in the City, remember), curing and smoking as per TV’s River Cottage in a series of masterclasses and workshops. Also don’t miss Wolfgat, the South African beachside cottage with room only for 20 guests and crowned ‘Restaurant of the Year’ at The World Restaurant Awards this year. The unique dining experience will be showcased alongside its partnership with Zacapa Rum.

And don’t panic, The Fire Pit makes a comeback, with DJ BBQ comparing while demonstrations and residences rotate round chefs from some of London’s top meat restaurants like Roth Bar and Grill, Berber & Q and Rovi who will demonstrate their skills and create trademark dishes. Watch out for a cameo from ex-Noma star chef plus Santiago Lastra who will also feature ahead of his new restaurant KOL opening later this year.

Of course it’s not all superstar chefs, there’ll be superstar restaurants in attendance too! Make sure you get a real taste of London thanks to over 100 dishes on offer from restaurants including Brigadiers, Berenjak, Kym’s, and Chotto Matte plus many more. If you’ve been before, don’t think it’ll be the same drill another year in, over 50% of the names appearing at the festival will be first-timers, like Lina Stores and Flesh & Buns.

Another foodie excitement is the arrival of exclusive Dominique Ansel Frozen S’mores! They’ve been created specially for the festival and will battle it out with Fuwa Fuwa’s Japanese Souffle Pancakes for the biggest Instagram sensation of Taste of London.

Not to mention some of the world’s biggest drinks brands, including Champagne house Laurent-Perrier and Tanqueray No.TEN, offering bespoke experiences for attendees. Laurent-Perrier will be housing a masterclass with street folders Bob’s Lobster, Pizza Pilgrims, Hotbox, Santo Remedio and Yum Bun to showcase the best food pairings alongside the iconic Champagne.

Good taste isn’t something you’re born with, it’s something you learn, and at Taste of London you can expect to experience more good tastes than the most refined duke or duchess.
