Louis XIV knew how to live. His excesses, of food, of style, not to mention women, knew no restraint. Nicknamed The Sun King, the monarch was surrounded by gold and finery… rather like you can now be, should you choose to stay at France’s latest hotel. Opening inside the Palace of Versailles, the hotel will offer guests the chance to experience luxury and excess like Louis (concubines not included).
The snappily titled Airelles Château de Versailles, Le Grand Contrôle, opens in Spring 2020 and though we don’t know a whole lot yet, there’s plenty of reason to be excited.
Firstly it’s actually in the Palace. Not squirrelled away in the grounds or located a few miles nearby (looking at you, Paris Beauvais Airport…), but within the palace. With just 14 bedrooms, the luxury hotel will heap 18th century glamour and luxury on guests ready to experience the true, modern, Versailles experience. Given the palace used to house most of the French aristocracy, there’s no shortage of space, but in keeping the scale small the hotel promises to be supremely exclusive.
It’s the work of hoteliers Airelles. Already noted for Airelles Gordes, a palatial hilltop hotel dominating the gorgeous Luberon town of Gordes, the group know how to deliver an impressive, no expense spared, hotel.
The hotel has teamed up with interior designer Christophe Tollemer on the design, known for his sumptuous and stylish form, he’ll be making sure the rooms are as perfectly designed as the private spa and the restaurant. Which, excitingly, will be headed up by chef Alain Ducasse. Best known for his three Michelin star-er Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester, the great man underscores the ambition of Airelles Château de Versailles, Le Grand Contrôle.
The new hotel opens in early 2020, and we’re already losing our heads over it like we’re Marie Antoinette…
