Much like the John Lewis advert or Pret’s festive menu, it isn’t really Christmas until Starbucks bring out their red cups. Well, Christmas coffee season is officially here. Who are we kidding? It’s been here since 1st November, just after pumpkin spiced latte fever started to simmer. But as much as we may love a hazelnut hot chocolate or a ginger spiced latte, is there something more sinister lurking in those festive red cups?
Onbuy.com have released information on just how much sugar this year’s top festive drinks contain and it’s not looking good. Too many of these and all we’ll all be getting for Christmas is Type 2 Diabetes.
The worst offender is Pret’s Mint Hot Chocolate. What might sound like a Christmas hug in a cup actually contains a cavity-inducing 47.9g of sugar. That’s 11.4 teaspoons of the stuff or roughly two milk chocolate bars. There’s less sugar in a can of Coke and this is just based on the ‘regular’ cup size. Horrifying.
If you’re gasping for a festive warmer, Pret’s Gingerbread Latte has significantly less sugar – just 5.4 teaspoons and the winner, in terms of a healthy(ish) choice is Caffe Nerro’s Ginger Latte, which comes in at just 86kcal and 13.9g of sugar (3.5 teaspoons).

On a serious note, with the government taking action to reduce the sugar we consume, these new figures leave a somewhat sour over sweet taste in our mouths. Granted, the odd gingerbread latte isn’t going to kill you but maybe rein it in over the next month. By 1st January we’ll probably all be giving up coffee for our New Year’s resolutions anyway.
