Let’s talk Grammys. One of the biggest nights in music, it always has promises controversies, shocks, and an overall good time. This year was no different, with the Grammys 2017 seeing Adele take home all five of the Grammys she was nominated for, including Best Record for Hello and Best Album for 25. But it was Beyoncé who stole the show, with an intense performance of two songs ‘Sandcastles’ and ‘Love Drought’ from her Lemonade album. Beyoncé won two of the nine awards she was nominated for, and many took to social media to profess their disappointment at her presumed snub for Best Album. While on stage to accept the award, Adele renounced her win and stated Beyoncé should have won for her critically acclaimed album Lemonade instead.

Other moments include Chance the Rapper winning best rap album for Coloring Book, beating his mentor Kanye West. His wins began before the show, when he won best rap performance win for his song No Problems, in the pre-ceremony. He then won the first award of the official ceremony, Best New Artist, despite being unsigned; unprecedented in Grammy history. David Bowie was also awarded five awards posthumously for Blackstar, including Best Rock Song, Best Rock Performance, Best Alternative album, Best Recording Package and Best Engineered Album, non-classical.

The message of this years’ Awards however, were distinctly political, with performers reiterating declarations of hope, protest and persistence. Katy Perry paid homage to Hilary Clinton in a white suit, an armband inscribed with ‘persist’, Beyoncé called for better representation, Paris Jackson referenced the Standing Rock protests and Schoolboy Q matched his daughter on the red carpet wearing a pink jumper emblazoned with ‘Girl Power’. A Tribe called Quest delivered a vigorous rebuke of the new Presidential Administration, and stated the performance of We the People was in honour of protesters across the World. Following on from recent years, more and more celebrities spoke out against the Academy, and used the platform to bring messages of social critique and dissension. All in all, the Grammys 2017 provided a wealth of inspiring entertainment.
