How much do you want to soak in the sun on the shores of Zanzibar or watch as dusk rolls in on the Kenyan bush? A summer holiday seems like a long way off the agenda at the moment, but there is another way to take in the breathtaking landscapes, wildlife, culture and history of Africa.

Beauty brand Malée was founded in 2010 by Zeze Oriaikhi-Sao, who was born in Nigeria and raised in the UK. Zeze wanted to share her passion for the people, natural beauty and healing rituals of her home continent and so she decided to bottle up her favourite scents, smells and traditions into a unique beauty brand. Every single Malée product benefits from centuries of traditional healing wisdom, ancient rites of passage and generations of shared beauty secrets passed from mother to daughter throughout African communities. It’s the perfect antidote to the long season of cold weather we’ve had!

Zeze Oriaikhi-Sao

It’s got a personal story, too; Zeze named the brand after her great-grandmother. Malée is a term of endearment used for a gracious learned woman in Bini, the language spoken by a tribe in the Edo Kingdom of Nigeria. This theme of community runs through everything at Malée. Zeze sources sustainable ingredients from local communities and gives back through her company-wide charitable initiative. With each purchase, the company donates a percentage of profits towards educating and mentoring students from disadvantage communities, while also providing the facilities and learning materials they need to reach their full potential.

There’s no time like the present – awaken your wanderlust with these sustainably-sourced, plant-based fragrances and formulas that capture the vivid and invigorating scents of Africa.

Soy candles

Malée has a collection of exquisite candles, across three collections: Verdure, Polyanthes and Peppersage.

Bursting with bright citrus, mint and patchouli, Verdure takes you on an exhilarating journey through the lush mangroves and dewy wetlands of Africa.

Polyanthes captures the mystery of the African night flowers as they bloom in the moonlight, releasing their subtle oral scent into the cool night air.

Last, but by no means least, the Peppersage, which is inspired by centuries of African philosophy and local tradition, restores a sense of calm and balance to your soul with spicy black peppercorn and notes of clary sage.

Room mist

Legend has it that in Tanzania, raindrops were believed to be the tears of Udo, goddess of youth and beauty – a sip of which could grant eternal beauty. Malée has done its best to recreate this magical elixir with a mix of warm patchouli, bright citrus and crisp mint.

Spray this room mist into the air for an instant burst of fragrance or lightly spritz onto linen, upholstery and clothing for long-lasting freshness. It’s as fresh as dew on a spring leaf and will leave you feeling youthful and full of energy.
