Ever wondered what would happen if Disney’s Mulan ran into Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge? We can’t say we had either, but that hasn’t stopped The Vaults theatre from throwing the pair together in their new immersive experience, Mulan Rouge.

The multi-disciplinary space, renowned for its wacky performance-led dining experiences, will be welcoming a new show for the autumn-winter season. It’ll see the wonderful worlds of Mulan and Moulin Rouge collide to create a drag-tastic parody performance, fuelled with comedy, burlesque and a four-course feast.

From Friday 15th October, the underground venue will be utterly transformed into a space filled with a whole lot of glamour. Written and directed by London drag artist, ShayShay, the narrative follows Mulan as they have to disguise themselves as a man in order to join the war effort, as their land is set to come under attack by the Huns.

But there’s a twist. They find themselves surrounded by glitz, glam and go-go girls when they find their regiment commandeers the glittering Mulan Rouge as its training site. It’s here that they uncover a world where they fit in, a world of acceptance. While they are thrusted into a world of masculinity, it’s only when Mulan meets a girl worth fighting for, that they truly explore their identity and discover the truth.

Championing a queer and women-led cast, the production is brilliantly executed. It hopes to raise awareness for the importance of Asian communities throughout is not overlooked and is very much celebrated in this light-hearted production.

The underground venue will be utterly transformed into a space filled with a whole lot of glamour.

As for the food-fronted area of the show, the four-course feast has been created by Flavourology, the creative culinary team behind Gingerline. Expect French cuisine meets Asian flavours, through dishes such as sticky soy and garlic tofu in lettuce wraps; baked camembert with a ginger chilli sauce and freshly baked baguette; braised lamb shoulder or butternut with star anise and spiced orange, petit pois, pickled red cabbage and crispy potatoes with black garlic butter; and charred pineapple on kataifi pastry with coconut and miso caramel.

Oh, and you guessed it, there’s a dress code. Think a hot Paris night in the Mulan Rouge so fine glam and armour are encouraged.

Whether it’ll be your first The Vaults production or your eighth, Mulan Rouge hopes to inject some light relief and humour into your life after endless lockdowns.

Mulan Rouge runs 15th October 2021 – January 2022
