It’s been over 10 years since UNIQLO first collaborated with renowned fashion designer Jil Sander, and after several successful collections over the years, this is the final drop for the duo. Jil Sander launched collaborative label +J with UNIQLO back in 2009 on a mission to bring simplicity to life through high quality yet accessible pieces. Although the high street is not shy of designer collaborations, the German designer’s functional and minimalistic designs are always highly anticipated and boast a conscious luxury that’s so widely sought after post-pandemic.
Despite leaving her eponymous label back in 2013, her unmistakable design DNA is evident through her UNIQLO collections and shares the basic principles of modernity, durability, and sustainability. “I prefer to attract interest in clothes in a more subtle way, concentrating on a new language of form and fresh proportions” Jil explains. “I avoid superfluous decorations that distract from the personality of the wearer. I concentrate on adding value through materials, craft, and the perfect fit.”
UNIQLO has been our one-stop shop for wardrobe basics for as long as we can remember, and the J+ Autumn/Winter 2021 collection is full of functional pieces that build the perfect capsule closet for a cold season ahead. Focusing on outerwear and the art of layering, you’ll find everything from puffer coats and knit dresses for women to cashmere sweaters and pea coats for men.
To me, +J is a laboratory of the future. I am trying to materialise what I feel about the reality around me. I hope to catch vibes, needs, and desires and, accordingly, design engaging looks, which encourage us to feel renewed and in sync with the present moment.
The monochromatic colour palette and understated silhouettes encapsulate a paired-back aesthetic that’s fundamental to a good working wardrobe. Practicality fused with sophistication is an art mastered by both Jil Sander and the Japanese fashion giant and the accessible price points always means a quick sell out. Get them whilst you still can.
This collection explores new oversized silhouettes with a controlled fit and variations on substantial winter classics. Comfort has become dear to us. We want to feel a personal shell.
