We’re inching closer and closer to Christmas. Soak up the best of it at one of these events taking place this weekend, from wreath workshops to Christmas markets. Or, if you’re desperately trying to avoid getting into the spirit before December 1st, there’s also plenty of activities going on that don’t involve anything of the sort, including a film festival and a colourful installation.

Lose yourself in the magic of cinema at this film festival

The ICA’s film festival, FRAMES OF REPRESENTATION, returns to London this week, bringing with it 20 UK premieres by filmmakers from 16 different countries. All relating to the theme, each film will showcase human experiences from around the world, playing with fiction and nonfiction in a fresh new way. 

Festival highlights include A Night of Knowing Nothing by Payal Kapadia, awarded for the best documentary at Cannes Film Festival 2021; The Last Shelter by Ousmane Zoromé Samassékou, exploring portraits of migrant journeys in the Saharan deserts; and The Tale of King Crab (Re Granchio) by Alessio Rigo de Righi and Matteo Zoppia, a look at immigrants and outsiders that merge with reality and fabulation.

Get into the festive spirit with this wreath workshop

Fancy putting your creativity to the test this Christmas? Book in for one of Columbia Creative’s workshops and see yourself becoming a pro at wreathing in a matter of hours. Taking place in their Southwark Pop-Up Studio, you’ll be able to rummage through all of their mixed materials, from dried fruits and spices to metallic foliage. Light festive refreshments are also included in the classes.

From live music to indulgent treats, get into the festive spirit this weekend as you wander around Wild by Tart’s Christmas Fair. Running this Saturday and Sunday, the fair will offer you the chance to browse and shop from a selection of independent brands, including Sirplus Clothing, Wilder Botanics and Molly Mahon. 

You’ll be able to delight in treats including mince pie choux buns and chocolate pecan brownies, all that can be washed down with hot chocolate and mulled wine. On Saturday, Wild by Tart and SSAW Collective will be running two wreath workshops too.

Brighten your weekend by visiting this installation

Having a rough week? Need an escape from all of the festivities taking over London? A new colourful installation has landed in London and you’ll be glad to know there’s not a sprig of holly in sight… 

From 19th November until 6th March 2022, set designer, multidisciplinary artist and world-builder Lydia Chan will be transforming the curving facades of NOW Gallery into a vibrant fantasy world.

Titled Your Ship Has Landed, the installation is bursting with vivid colours, from fluorescent pinks and purples to neon greens, blues and yellows. Chan’s work has reinvented nature as a foreign planet, incorporating AR technology and alien motifs, and bridged the gap between our digital lifestyle and our renewed experience of the natural world.

London’s Zero Waste Christmas Market returns this weekend. Running on Saturday and Sunday at Old Spitalfields Market, the weekend will be packed out with the best of the UK’s independent, sustainable businesses, each with their own stalls abrim with gifts and goodies.

Grab yourself a warming mulled wine as you wander around the market, perusing the likes of reusable crackers, vegan brands and stalls selling sustainable products. Munch through this R&B themed brunch

Keeping on the festive theme, Skylight Peckham is hosting a yuletide themed brunch – with a twist.

Taking place this Sunday 28th November and Sunday 12th December, the brunch – titled Sleigh My Name – will feature all of your brunch classics.
