Japan has a certain pull factor to it. Maybe it’s the perfectly placed skyscrapers of Tokyo, the adorable Kawaii craze, or simply the beautiful cherry blossom lining the streets of Hirosaki, either way it’s firmly found its way to the top of our travel list. But with the air bridges closed and the country firmly in lockdown for another two weeks, you’ll find us jetting off figuratively with our favourite Japanese spirit brand, House of Suntory.

Founded back in 1899 by Shinjiro Torii, the House of Suntory was built on one intention: to enrich the livelihoods of people around the world through Japanese craftsmanship, quality and flavour. Fast forward to today, and these factors have been poured earnestly into House of Suntory’s three spirits, Haku Vodka, Toki Whisky and Roku Gin.

Whether you’re a gin enthusiast, whisky lover, vodka’s your drink of choice, or you simply miss parading the streets of Tokyo and too want to discover how to explore the flavours of Japan while in the comfort of your pjs, the House of Suntory beholds all of the answers. Which is why we’ve teamed up with 31DOVER to tell you why we’re reaching for House of Suntory this winter. Plus, how you can create the perfect festive serve with each spirit.

Right now, as an added little extra, each bottle order from 31DOVER comes with four perfectly matched London Essence mixers, so you can enjoy your favourite tipple with ease.

Haku Vodka

The key to a good vodka is that it’s clear, clean and lightly flavourful. Haku, which means brilliant white, is made from 100% Japanese white rice and is then filtered through bamboo charcoal, to ensure a polished finish. The result of House of Suntory’s vodka is a rounded, soft taste with natural sweetness and unami coming through from the koji rice.

To highlight the rice-derived sweetness of Haku to its best, create a Japanese style martini.

For the ‘When Haku Met Sake Martini’, you’ll need:

  • 50ml chilled Haku
  • 10ml chilled Sake

Grab your martini glass and salt half of the rim. Then simply add the chilled Haku and chilled Sake and stir.

Right now, with every bottle bought on 31DOVER, you’ll receive four complimentary London Essence Rhubarb & Cardamom Sodas, perfect for adding a citrusy hit to your usual vodka soda combo. Simple, yet effective.

Think fresh notes of basil, green apple and honey, with fragments of grapefruit, green grapes, peppermint and thyme.

Toki Whisky

Japan is famous for its ever-expanding whisky offerings, and House of Suntory’s has made quite the impression, often noted for its vivid blend where old meets new.

Toki, meaning ‘time’ in Japanese, is a vibrant blend of whiskies from Suntory’s Hakushu, Yamazaki and Chita distilleries, and features the quintessential characteristics of a Suntory Whisky blend; exquisite balance, harmony, and oneness.

Think fresh notes of basil, green apple and honey, with fragments of grapefruit, green grapes, peppermint and thyme. Plus, a subtle sweetness and spicy finish, with hints of vanilla oak, white pepper and ginger.

For those cooler winter days, enjoy Toki hot. The hot water helps to bring forward Toki’s softness.

To create your own Hot Toki, you’ll need:

  • 40ml Toki
  • 100ml hot water
  • A dash of honey
  • Lemon peel, lime leaf and clove spear to garnish

Simply build with the Toki, hot water and dash of honey, and top with a clove spear, lemon peel and lime leaf.

With every bottle ordered through 31DOVER, you’ll receive two complimentary highball glasses, plus four London Essence White Peach & Jasmine Sodas, perfect for something a little different.

Roku Gin

For the gin lovers out there, Roku Gin boasts a fresh mix of botanicals, rich in character and flavour. Japanese for ‘six’, this gin is named after the six Japanese botanicals used in its blend. Expect notes of cherry blossom, followed by green tea, smokey leaves and a light bitter finish.

Create something a little different to your usual gin and tonic and go for a Roku Winter Highball. To create, you’ll need:

  •  50ml Roku
  • 15ml Yuzu juice
  • 15ml sugar syrup
  • 70ml soda
  • Shiso leaf and yuzu peel to garnish

Build by combining Roku, yuzu juice, sugar syrup and soda, and garnish with a shiso leaf and yuzu peel.

Order with 31DOVER and receive four complementary London Essence Grapefruit & Rosemary Tonics, perfect for adding a sharp citrusy punch and subtle herby flavour to your winter tipple.

All three bottles are finished with a Japanese rice paper label. It’s simple, minimalist and classy, and would look perfect perched on a bar cart.
