Halston, Netflix

Netflix is proving to be more than just the enabler of our lockdown binge-fests, it’s coming up trumps with some serious fashion inspiration too – think ’60s shifts in The Queen’s Gambit and Diana’s quirky knitwear from The Crown.

This summer, the network treated us to Halston, the Netflix Original starring Ewan McGregor that charts the rise to fame of iconic American fashion designer of the same name and his subsequent fall from grace. It’s all set against a fabulous background of incredible interiors, obscene drug taking, plenty of sex and mega fashion. It’s a feast for the eyes and, for any bona fide vintage fan, it’s outright fashion porn.

So what’s it all about? If you’ve not tuned in, Halston was once the darling of New York’s social scene, dressing the likes of Bianca Jagger, Marlene Dietrich, Lauren Bacall, partying with the likes of Andy Warhol, Liza Minnelli and Truman Capote at the infamous Studio 54. He dressed the city’s most stylish women and his signature style – billowing maxi dresses, statement one-shoulders, metallic lame pleats and fluid tailoring – became synonymous with the era.

The five-part Netflix series delves deep into Halston’s history thanks to the talent of costume designer Jeriana San Juan, who expertly brings the archives of the American designer to the small screen. And after a year of wearing sweat pants the sheer glamour of it all is exactly what we need. Here’s how to get the look in 2021.

You could go really Victor Huge-o and buy the real thing...

Of course, if all this talk of Halston is burning a hole in your pocket then you could go really Victor Huge-o and buy the real thing. Halston, actual real Halston, has changed hands a number of times since the ’80s, but it is still going!

The brand has wisely used all the free promotion to launch a line of dresses from the mini-series.

They’re not cheap, but Halston wouldn’t have wanted them to be!
