There’s a new legal drama coming to Netflix this week, hot on the heels of the streaming service’s runway success with courtroom drama Anatomy of a Scandal. Like that series, the upcoming The Lincoln Lawyer is adapted from a novel, or rather a series of them.
The novel of the same name was already adapted into a film in 2011, starring Matthew McConaughey, and the new Netflix show also incorporates elements from the book’s sequel The Brass Verdict. The LA set series was delayed by the pandemic, but is now finally set to arrive on 13th May.
The plot of the series revolves around a defence attorney living in Los Angeles, and who works out of the back of his Lincoln Town Car. Manuel Garcia-Rulfo plays the titular lawyer Mickey Haller, driven to win his case and get his life back on track. He stars alongside a cast that includes Neve Campbell, Beckie Newton, Angus Sampson, LisaGay Hamilton and Reggie Lee
Having found his career and life jeopardised by an accident and the death of his law partner, Mickey decides to take things into his own hands, and runs his law practice out of the back of his Lincoln car. Something of an “iconoclastic idealist”, Mickey’s portable legal services become embroiled in a murder case that he hopes will restart his career.
The series has been some time coming, with the pandemic not only delaying production but also resulting in a switch of distributors, with American channel CBS deciding to drop it and Netflix picking up, ordering a ten episode first season run. It’s also not a straight remake of the McConaughey film, with a slightly different plot and different elements pulled from the original book series.

If you’ve ever seen Amazon Prime’s Bosch, which is also based on a book series by Michael Connelly and set in LA, don’t expect any characters from that show to pop up, which was confirmed by Netflix. Mickey is however assisted by investigator Cisco (Sampson) and office assistant Lorna (Newton), and there’s also the difficult matter of Mickey’s ex wife Maggie (Campbell) being the prosecutor on the case.
If you’re a fan of unconventional lawyers (like Better Call Saul, The Good Wife or even Marvel’s Daredevil), then The Lincoln Lawyer is a series to watch. All ten episodes of the first season will be available when the show drops on Netflix on 13th May.
