Canada Water’s Dock X events centre will be home to a brand new immersive art exhibition next month. The new show will be centred around the life and art of Mexican artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, and is entitled Mexican Geniuses: A Frida and Diego Immersive Experience.

This new exhibition is not just a standard art gallery: the idea is for the show to be fully immersive, allowing you explore the two artists’ work and get a better understanding of them. It’ll use state of the art technology in order to lose yourself in their art and world.

Both painters are both regarded as two of the most significant and influential figures in 20th century art, and in particular in their native Mexico. Kahlo’s work has often been described as surrealist and using magical realism; and depicting the female form in a uncompromising way. Rivera meanwhile is known for his use of cubism and Mexican moralism, being one of the pioneers of the latter. The two married in 1929, divorced in 1939, and remarried the next year. An Oscar nominated biopic about Kahlo called Frida was released starring Salma Hayek as Kahlo and Alfred Molina as Rivera.

Explore the pain and passion of the two hugely influential artists...

It touts itself as a fully 360 degree experience...

The new exhibition is similar to one launched about Van Gogh in 2021 (also an immersive event), and seeks to allow visitors to explore the pain and passion of the two hugely influential artists. The life and the art of Kahlo and Rivera are put on display through light, sound, staging and colour, with the similarities and differences between their styles explored. It touts itself as a “fully 360 degree experience”, meaning you’ll be completely immersed in the art and story.

Held at the Dock X event theatre, which previously hosted Titanic: The Exhibition, the experience is a tour through four galleries of their art, thoughts, dreams and influences. Tickets for the show are available through event organiser Fever’s marketplace, at £19.90 for adults and £11.50 for children. It debuts on 28th May, and will be open every day of the week except Monday (full opening hours are available on Fever’s website), and each tour lasts around an hour and a half.

So if you’re a fan of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera’s artwork, or have never heard of them but want to experience some incredible art in an immersive way, Frida and Diego is definitely something that you should be on your London to do list. Immersive art shows are becoming a big trend in the post pandemic era, so this is a great opportunity to try one yourself. The full address for the event is Retail Park, Unit 1 Canada Water, Surrey Quays Rd, London SE16 2XU, United Kingdom.
