If we can’t go to the restaurants, they will come to us. It’s not all about Soho and Mayfair, Hackney is home to some of London’s foodie gems, from beloved neighbourhood spots to bona fide Michelin stars, and a host of them are dealing with the Coronavirus crisis best they can by turning themselves into delivery services until things return to normal.
From Pidgin’s Michelin-star menu and Angelina’s seven-course dinner party to your door, to the best dumplings this side of the city and Bistrotheque’s ‘Burgarita’ kits, these Hackney restaurants have your weekend plans covered.
We’ve waxed lyrical about this place before but it’s one of our Hackney go-tos. Blurring the lines between Japanese and Italian cooking (shouldn’t work, but does), the Dalston-based restaurant usually puts on a weekly changing tasting menu of international delights, from savoury doughnuts made with katsuobushi (dried bonito flakes) to ravioli paired with a ramen-style sauce.
The dishes are fantastically creative (and Instagrammable) but unpretentious – a fine line to draw in hip east London.
When restaurants were forced to shut, the team (a stellar line-up of ex-Bocca di Lupo, -Murano, -River Café alumni) dedicated their time to helping the community, cooking up and delivering meals to some of the most vulnerable people in the area.
They even enlisted the help of Academy Award winner Olivia Coleman to do the delivering – pretty cool.
Plus, to please their regular customers, they’re currently putting on Friday night, seven-course, delivery menus for those in the area, for just £34. The menu includes the likes of pea and miso tempura, creamy risotto with burnt soy butter and beef skin ragu with polenta – think a dinner party straight to your door and well worth the humble price tag.

Aptly named, Homing Pidgin, the Michelin-starred, can-never-get-a-table Hackney eatery have created Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday night menus to turn your dining table into a restaurant.
Choose from either the regular menu or a vegetarian option, with delights such as confit and smoked chicken leg with salsa verde and potato dauphinoise, mackerel escabeche, rocket, asparagus and pickled shallots and, the best bit, dulce de leche sponge pudding with strawberries, pink peppercorn Chantilly cream and whey caramel.
Each week you can also order the wines the restaurant have chosen to be paired with each course (not mandatory, but if you like), from as little as £14.
The set menu is priced at just £25 per person and considering you can easily rack that price up on a substandard Deliveroo order, it’s a great choice for your next weekend in.

Those who live in the Clapton area will almost certainly be missing their friends and neighbours, The Dumplings.
It’s not until today that the dumpling house and sake bar have been able to open up for home deliveries and collection but, hurrah! The day has come.
Expect a changing rota of the best dumplings you’ll find in east London – our favourite are the squid ink and cod’s cheek – plus, a selection of staple small plates – the pork belly is a must-order.
The restaurant is launching its new take away menu on the 9th June in Clapton and 16th June in Victoria Park. Plus, there will be a Jianbing Stall in the window of both restaurants serving up Chinese wraps cooked to order, street stall style, during the day.

Lyle’s, the modern British (and starred) Shoreditch restaurant and Flor, it’s little sister bakery and wine bar in Borough Market, are both the much-loved eateries from James Lowe and John Ogier. It’s no secret London’s food scene has taken a beating from the Covid crisis, but James and John have reacted to the tough times and come up with an interim plan: ASAP Pizza.
The posh pizza joint will launch this week, 10th June, and even though very little has popped up on their socials thus far (a mere two pictures), we have no doubt these are going to be some of London’s best pizzas. The menu will feature both red and white bases and take inspiration from some of the classics.
Think a modern ‘Hawaiian’ scattered with red onion, grilled pineapple, cured pig’s cheek and scotch bonnet if you dare. As well as the ‘Prosciutto,’ adorned with delicious homemade prosciutto cotto from Gothelney Farm down in Cornwall. If you’re more of a white pizza base fan, the ‘On and On’ sounds seriously good thanks to green onions, new season garlic, wild garlic and wild marjoram.

You can’t call yourself a bonafide Hackney resident if you haven’t been to Bistrotheque on a Sunday. Their iconic brunches packed with seasonal, modern British dishes, long banquet table and even longer, lazy lunches were jam packed every weekend until Covid hit.
But the team are bringing the magic to you now (minus the live piano set), with their Sunday brunch and Thursday – Saturday dinner deliveries.
The dishes are perfect if you’re after some high-end comfort food, from their famous pies to their ‘Burgeritas’ – that’s two beef burgers served with gorgonzola and green chilli rarebit; two portions of chips and one giant spicy margarita to share, all for £55.
Nights in and lockdown lunches just got better.
Dinner orders are available for delivery and collection Thursday – Saturday, as well as Sunday brunch.
Crank it up a notch on the scoville scale with the much-loved Mama’s Jerk. The Carribean restaurant that specialises in Jerk chicken, have been made the best of a bad situation and are delivering spicy dishes by the shed load to Hackney homes.
Available on Deliveroo, tuck into 24-hour marinaded jerk chicken wraps, delicious plantain or their special ‘Biriyardi’ – a take on the classic biryani but served with Jerk seasoned rice and peas, sweetcorn, plantain and either Jerk Chicken, Jerk Sweet Potato Cakes or Jerk spiced Saltfish Cakes.
