There were collective squeals of glee when news of this came through in The Handbook office (I say office, I mean our respective homes), but we can reveal that summer 2020 is officially going to be saved with the opening of the first social distanced pub.
Ok, it’s not quite a pub. It’s an outdoor pop-up space at South London’s 338 Studios – one of London’s largest venues that you may remember from their raucous Pub Tropicana events that have been going since 2017.
We don’t have an official opening date (hurray up, BoJo), but the 4th July is the date on everyone’s lips right now, we just need the government to confirm it.
Open Saturdays and Sundays, the pub will adhere to social distancing guidelines – limited capacity, extra seating, more hand washing, table service only – to ensure everyone is kept as safe as possible but the fun doesn’t stop. And they have scheduled in fun by the bucket load, from Resident DJs (and some very special guests) to Premiership games on the big screen, bingo nights to Mr Ted’s Apocalyptic Pub Quiz and comedy nights.
In a bid to make up some of the Summer of 2020 we’ve lost so far, the team will also be curating special socially distanced events, from ‘Pubstonbury’ to a late Summer Solstice.
On the food and drinks front, pub grub, street food and frozen cocktails will be served alongside your usual beer and chips, and there will even be an Escape Room – Flight 388 – on site if you want to add a little healthy competition to your post-lockdown celebrations. Teams will need to book separately to get involved.
The only downfall is that it’s in North Greenwich, so if you don’t live in the area it’s a bit of a schlep to get to if you don’t fancy the Jubilee Line.
Events Director at 338 Studios, Dan Perrin has said, “capacity will be limited to ensure things are sensibly spaced and there will be measures in place to keep things safe and healthy, but oh my days will we dance! We have a lot of time to make up for!
“There will be dancing…but no dancefloor. There will be togetherness…but at a sensible distance…there will be a lot of fun…but it will be safe and in keeping with the national effort to beat this virus!”
More space, no sticky floors, no queuing for a drink, the biggest pub garden and guaranteed seats? This might just be London’s greatest pub ever. It’s time to dip your toes back into the London pub scene – weather permitting, of course.
