Remember when Oasis played Knebworth, Elvis’ iconic Vegas residency or… when Gary Numan played Cars to an audience of people actually sat in their cars?
The last one might sound odd (and not quite as cool) but it’s set to become a reality as entertainment company Live Nation have come up with an ingenious way around social distancing measures and the gig scene.
The Utilita Live From The Drive-In will see a series of artists perform sets across 12 UK venues later this summer, from Edinburgh to London, each performing live on stage backed by a full concert production that fans can enjoy all from their very own viewing zone – their cars.
The news, which broke last week, was a glimmer of hope for both the music industry and gig fans who have seen shows and festivals cancelled since March. And even with the new one-metre social distancing rule in place here in the UK, it’s near impossible to action that within a music crowd.
Some huge names have already been announced, from The Streets to Dizzee Rascal, Gary Numan to Tony Hadley, as well as The Snuts, Ash, Embrace, The Zutons, The Lightning Seeds, Beverley Knight, Tom Grennan (shown below) and Jack Savorett to name just a few.
Live Nation have said that the gigs are “designed to comply with all official guidelines” and will allow “fans to enjoy concerts in a one-of-a-kind drive-in setting from their own private individual viewing zones next to their cars”.
A dedicated area will be given to each vehicle allowing standing, swaying or all-out moshing and punters are welcome to bring folding chairs to sit and enjoy the performances too.
Up to 300 cars will be able to attend the gigs at once, without a doubt, making them another weird and wonderful experience to come out of the COVID-19 era.
