Jean Paul Gaultier: Fashion Freak Show is a brilliant and bombastic new show that’s debuting this month on the 15th July, and it’s gathered a strong buzz in the theatre world. The show covers the life of fashion icon Jean Paul Gaultier and exploring different eras in fashion and pop culture. Fashion Freak Show is heading to The Roundhouse, the famed London music venue, after its London debut at the Southbank Centre in 2019.

The production first debuted in 2019 in Paris, and this new version is updated and reimagined so it can be staged in the round. It’s an all-singing all-dancing extravaganza, and a as you might expect, a lot of fashion and outlandish costumes. There’ll be singers, dancers, actors and circus performers who’ll bring the whole thing to life with gusto, playing “outlandish, passionate, larger than life, rude, sexy, sassy creatures and personalities” according to the show’s official synopsis.
The show incorporates a host of new designs by Gaultier, as well as plenty of his old classics, so you expect pieces like Madonna’s iconic cone bra, as well as plenty of others. All of Gaultier’s attitude and flair that earned him the title of the enfant terrible of French fashion will be featured in the show, all with the former Eurotrash host’s signature humorous twist.

The show is meant to celebrate Gaultier’s 50 years of fashion exploits, as well as telling his life in a somewhat fictionalised way. In an interview with The Guardian, Gaultier commented: “For the show, they will see a little of my life. Actually, not a little, but it’s my life without the detail, explaining how a little boy, from a very good grandmother, dressed his teddy bear with the conic bra when he was seven years old, long before Madonna!”

So, if you’re looking for a trip to the theatre that’s a feast for the eyes (and other senses) and are in the mood for some rebellious fashion fun, then you should look no further than the Fashion Freak Show. The London run at The Roundhouse begins on 19th July and lasts until 28th August, with previews on the 16th and 18th July. Tickets are available over at The Roundhouse website. There’s also an official soundtrack album available now.
