We all know musicians make for great biopic fodder: Bohemian Rhapsody, Rocketman, Judy and plenty more in recent years have explored the pressures and ups and downs of musical celebrities and their lives. There’s also usually a big name star attached as the main role (and sometimes it seems a bit obvious they’re pining for an Oscar), and now one of the biggest names in music looks set to be paired with one of Hollywood’s most acclaimed rising stars in a new biopic about Madonna, which Julia Garner has entered negotiations for.

While it’s not 100% nailed on, the Ozark actress has been linked to the role for a while, and was apparently considered to play the Queen of Pop amongst a handful of actresses like Florence Pugh and Europhia‘s Sydney Sweeney. Garner apparently auditioned and now has been offered the role- so it seems like the casting is pretty much going ahead. 2022 will almost certainly be the breakout year in Garner’s career, with performances in Ozark and Inventing Anna receiving acclaim and widespread popularity with their respective show’s fans.

The Madonna film will, like the other biopics mentioned above, likely be released in time to be considered for a future Oscars ceremony, and Garner is no stranger to lifting statuettes- she’s received two Emmy awards already for her work as Ruth on Ozark. Of course, a personality like Madonna is not exactly an easy one to distill to film, but if anyone has the chop, it’s Garner, and she certainly looks the part. Though not a lot is known about what the film actually entails, nor the principal cast- what is known is that it will be made by Universal, and will focus on the artist’s life as a singer, dancer and superstar.

Oh, and the other big element is that the film will be directed by none other than Madonna herself, having already directed some small films in the past. The singer wants to tell her own story to the world, and wants an authentic portrayal of her musical world, with the audition process apparently requiring a high level of singing and dancing. Whether the biopic will be the definitive version of Madonna’s life or not, it’ll certainly be interesting to see how it turns out. There’s no release date for the film yet, but a debut late next year or sometime in 2024 seems likely.
