Anyone else still reeling from the sheer audacity of being asked to get dressed and leave the house, post The Great Christmas Hibernation of 2021? After lolling on the sofa, snaffling leftover chocolates and avoiding a dreaded case of Covid for so long, we’ve forgotten how to do anything else.

We’ve eased ourselves back outdoors (then onto someone else’s sofa, with chocolates) by reviewing a spoiling, socially distant afternoon at London institution, The Milestone. We loved it so much, we slept over afterwards.

If any hotel knows how to take care of you, it’s this one, having welcomed thousands of travellers – and celebs – since opening in 1922. Ladies and gentlemen, book in and lounge on!

The first thing you need to know about The Milestone is that you’ll want to arrive looking smart. It is finally time to peel off the loungewear (if only for one day) and don something slick. You’ll be grateful of this upon entering the grand doorway, welcomed by oh-so-friendly and achingly professional staff in natty green uniform.

Led to your afternoon tea table or sofa (call ahead to nab the fireside spot, if you can) you’ll enjoy knowing nods from other customers. Yep, you’re already in agreement that this warm, cosy tea room is the ideal spot to spend a January day.

After stuffing ourselves with spiced apple & gingerbread cake – and almost slipping into a deep slumber – we checked out our super posh digs.

Upstairs, rooms are the definition of sumptuous. Suites brim with fine fabrics, fresh flowers, antique furnishings and rare artworks. No two rooms or suites are alike, yet each of the 43 casts its own spell.

Deluxe Studios come with 24-hour butler service...

It’s worth mentioning that Deluxe Studios come with round-the-clock butler service. Yep, really. The Milestone will stop at nothing to make sure you’re taken care of – it’s kind of their ‘thing’, and we’re not complaining.

Not lifting a finger in super luxe surrounds, it’s easy to decide that 2022 won’t be so bad after all… now we know the perfect place to escape reality. If only for one perfect day…

The most quintessential of English traditions is upheld in its finest form at The Milestone. Sat in the heart of the Royal Borough of Kensington, you couldn’t be better placed to try afternoon tea for the first time – or solidify The Milestone’s No.1 spot on your list of faves.

Inspired by the The Crown, Royal Afternoon Tea is served in Cheneston’s Restaurant, the Park Lounge or the Conservatory. Expect delicate finger sandwiches, and freshly baked scones piled high with Devonshire clotted cream and home-made preserves.

That’s not all – a selection of pastries including √©clairs, tartlets, cupcakes and macarons soon follows.

In addition, a vast collection of loose leaf teas boggles the mind (but you can always simplify things by ordering a Lanson Champagne instead).
