From doubling up your outerwear to layering your knitwear, follow our guide on how to dress for winter whilst still remaining stylish.

It’s freezing. There’s no denying winter is well and truly here and the main question on our lips is “how we will survive the season without wearing a ski onesie to dinner?” Read on for tips that will help you master wrapping up against the cold whilst still remaining polished and without reaching for your puffer coat 24/7…

Double up your outerwear

Your wardrobe is bursting with blazers and once a standalone staple, they’re not warm enough to be riding solo. Instead of packing them away ’til spring, use them as a middle layer by wearing over a fine-knit base and underneath a well-tailored coat. It’s a perfectly polished look for city dressers when worn tonal. Stick to complementary neutral hues and keep prints to a minimum. Shackets are a great opinion too and look great layered over a hoodie for off-duty dressing and finished with a trench coat on top.

Layer your knitwear

Too hot inside, too cold outside. Sweating on the tube but shivering on the walk there? The answer is as simple as layering a sweater over your shoulders for warmth and using it as an extra layer when needed. It gets bonus points for making any look instantly cool and effortless too. We like the contrast of wrapping a light coloured knit over a dark coat and vice versa.

The sweater vest trend, which looked great paired with an oversized white shirt this autumn, can work hard for winter too, and we’re not ready to give it up just yet. For a fresh take, layer over a thin-knit turtleneck – a seriously versatile staple – for a cool alternative to chunky knits.

Accessorize

It’s a no brainer, but investing in a scarf/hat combo will bring joy to wrapping up. Knitted beanies, whether wool or cashmere, will be the peanut butter to your jelly and fight frost-bitten ears. An accessory we simply can’t live without. Oversized blanket scarves make a stylish statement and are the perfect accompaniment to a sophisticated wool coat. The bigger the better, we say.

Base layers

They are fundamental to any winter wardrobe and should be invested in. A fine-knit black turtleneck or bodysuit will work hard in your wardrobe and provide a great base layer for pretty much anything. Marks & Spencer and Uniqlo do great HeatGen thermals that are discreet and work underneath everything from sweaters to dresses, helping you look seamless from day to night. We recommend buying in a multitude of neutral colours so you have on-hand for any outfit.
