The Nightjar Review: What We Thought

New? It opened back in 2010 but the new summer cocktails launched last month. Where?  Just a couple of minutes from Old Street tube, it’s tucked behind a very unassuming door – the sort you walk past and never give a second glance; but if you were to stop you’d see a small plaque with a little Nightjar bird on it. 129 City Road, Old Street, EC1V 1JB, www.barnightjar.com  On the menu: The new menu is divided into three areas, all of which are significant in the history of cocktails: pre-prohibition, prohibition, post-war as well as a section of Nightjar signature cocktails. […]

Zerodegrees Review – What We Thought

New? Not at all. The Blackheath brewery was the first Zerodegrees to open, launching 16 years ago in 2000. Where? 31/33 Montpelier Vale, Blackheath, SE3 0TJ www.zerodegrees.co.uk On the menu: Zerodegrees offers a very extensive menu, made up of a variety of dish-types including pizza, pasta, mussels, risottos, salads and more. Of course, the speciality of the venue is their beer menu, featuring a large range of brewed-on-site lagers and ales.  The Look: Zerodegrees has a very unique and interesting look. Undecorated, bare brick walls combined with an aesthetically traditional wooden bar give an unpretentious-yet-comfortable atmosphere to the place, while items […]

Nipa Thai review – what we thought

New? Nipa Thai has just celebrated 20 years of business in April. Where? 1st Floor, Lancaster London, Lancaster Terrace, Paddington, W2 2TY www.niparestaurant.co.uk On the menu: Authentic Thai cuisine with dishes like Thai curry, stir fried prawns, and steamed seabass in a chilli broth. First Impressions: It’s not easy to find as the restaurant isn’t advertised anywhere and I would have been none the wiser about its existence if I wasn’t looking for it specifically (despite this the restaurant was still busy and filled up quickly). The Look: There are lots of nods to Thailand with blue and gold patterned carpets, traditional cutlery and […]

Social Pantry Review – What We Thought

New? This was a one off supper club but keep your eye out for more happening! Where?  170A Lavender Hill, Battersea, SW11 5TG ,www.socialpantry.co.uk On the menu: Each supper club is different but this one had a spring feel to it, with lots of beautiful edible flowers, light flavours and floral notes. First Impressions:  The great thing about supper clubs is that they can be exactly what you them to be, if you just want to talk to the people you know then you can, or if you want to make new friends then sitting next to someone at the table is […]

Santa Maria Review – What We Thought

New? It opened back in April Where?  This is the second site, (the first being in Ealing) and is at the end of New Kings Road:  92-94 Waterford road, SW6 2HA, www.santamariapizzeria.com On the menu: Award winning pizza and a lot of it. So much in fact that it is rather overwhelming, the toppings are kept simple and fresh in many different variations – these are classic Italian pizzas so think lots of parmesan, mozzarella, San Marzano tomato sauce DOP, artichokes, olives and truffle oil. You won’t find toppings like Hawaiian, pepperoni or BBQ – this is the real deal. Accompanying the pizzas […]

Obica St Paul Review: What We Thought

New? Obica opened in March 2016, much to the delight of mozzarella-mad Londoners. Where? 4 Limeburners Lane, 1 Ludgate Hill, London EC4M 7AA obica.com On the menu: A lot of mozzarella plus pasta, pizza, charcuterie – classic Italian dishes. First Impressions: We dined on a Monday evening and it was relatively quiet even for a fairly new restaurant. Our waiter was very friendly and authentically Italian, complete with accent. The Look: Slightly industrial but still quite casual and relaxed, al fresco dining space runs along the length of the restaurant. In one corner sat a huge copper stove, with a chef making fresh pasta in a food […]

Quaglino’s Spring Afternoon Tea – what we thought

New? It opened in 1991 and then re-opened in 2014 after a refurbishment. Where? 16 Bury St, London SW1Y 6AJ www.quaglinos-restaurant.co.uk On the menu: Their new spring afternoon tea served with either Moët & Chandon Champagne or Moët & Chandon Rosé. First Impressions: With no restaurant sign I almost missed the venue and had to check the menu in the window before confirming it was the place I was after. It was a scorching hot day and due to being underground Quaglino’s had a cool, cave-like feel to it especially after being exposed to the bright sunshine outside. The Look: The interior is dark […]

Burro e Salvia Review – What We Thought

New? The first Burro e Salvia opened back in 2013, when founder Gaia Enria realised that London loved pasta but didn’t have good quality fresh, hand-made pasta. The new workshops, however started last month. Where?  We headed to the Shoreditch site, 52 Redchurch Street, E2 7DP but you’ll also find them in Islington and East Dulwich, www.burroesalvia.co.uk On the Menu: Fresh handmade pasta that you can eat in or take away – they’ve recently launched new spring dishes that include the likes of Ricotta tortelli with asparagus’ served carbonara-style and Tajarin with Italian sausage ragu.  If you’re heading to one of the […]

First Impressions: K West Hotel is a trendy hotel full of modern amenities so I sat and relaxed in the spa reception with some citrus water before my treatment. The Treatment: Baobab is an African fruit (nicknamed the feel good fruit) which is an excellent source of vitamin C that also increases energy levels, […]

New? Brand new – Roba opened 11th April 2016 so we went to see how they’re getting on. Where? 34 Norfolk Place, London W2 1QW www.robarestaurant.co.uk On the menu: Roba is all about doing grilled food right. The simple menu is comprised of snacks (which double up as starters) including mini burgers, beetroot hummus and hot wings, larger dishes such as duck legs with quail eggs or smoked salmon and spinach mousse, and, of course, the grill, made up of a series of meats including sirloin and rib eye steaks, grilled fish and BBQ spare ribs. St Clements Brunch Review – What We Thought

New? Now a couple of years old, St Clements is a staple feature in the weekends of Parsons Green residents. Where? 201 New Kings Road, Parsons Green, SW6 4SR www.stclementscafe.co.uk  First Impressions: As chic yet unfussy as you’d expect for any brunch cafe in South West London, the main feature of St Clements is the counter, piled high with seriously tempting-looking cakes and pastries. Populated almost exclusively by girls in their activewear, with a few couples in their mid-twenties and a couple of buggies outside, St Clements is clearly a failsafe meeting spot for locals at any time of day. The […]
