Searcys The Gherkin Review – What We Thought

Whenever I watch the likes of Great British Bake Off or MasterChef I always think, “but what would the judges do?”. Could Paul Hollywood pull off a showstopper worthy of Mary Berry’s praise? How would their own dishes fair if they were being scrutinised to that standard? If MasterChef The Professionals judge Monical Galetti took to the challenge I have no doubt that she’d be well on the way to winning. Set to open her own restaurant later this year, the former Le Gavroche senior sous chef has created a menu which is available for a limited time at Searcys […]

Le Pain Quotidien Review – What We Thought

I love Le Pain Quotidien. When I’m trawling the streets of London (for whatever reason) and find myself in need of a sit down and a perk up I know I can rely on the Belgians. Though the bakery is a huge part of Le Pain – the name itself means The Daily Bread – my visit in mid-January found me torn between picking up a hazelnut flute and downing a luminous green juice. But I had been invited to review the new detox offerings so that’s what I did. The Wimbledon Village branch was packed with yummy mummies, daddies […]

The Beaufort Bar Review – What We Thought

If you want the perfect example of opulence then look no further than the Savoy’s Beaufort Bar; stepping into it is like checking your usual persona at the door and becoming someone far more glamourous, someone decadent, you half expect to see Great Gatsby quaffing a martini at the bar. Art Deco in style, polished jet black walls are lined and detailed with burnt gold; add in the live pianist and it’s ideal for late night drinks post theatre or as many couples were doing going on a date – the more intimate, golden alcoves were certainly making one couple […]

Plateau Honey Menu Review – What We Thought

Nestled amongst the high-rise buildings of Canary Wharf and overlooking the ice rink, Plateau certainly offers an impressive view. The warm and comfortable atmosphere and décor were a stark contrast to the grey and imposing corporate buildings that make up the surroundings. Large, freestanding lamps gave the room a very homely feel, while wooden panelling and luxurious furniture ensure that you don’t forget you’re in a quality establishment. Going into the meal I was sceptical. The task of creating a six-course meal with a staple ingredient as sweet as honey certainly seemed challenging to me, and it would be interesting […]

Sanderson Nourish Menu Review – What We Thought

For the second year, The Sanderson have enlisted the expert help of nutritionist Karen Cummings-Parker to devise a menu made up of dishes that pack a nutritional punch. Far from the January detoxes many of us are convinced need to happen in the early months of the new year, Karen insists post-Christmas isn’t the time for detoxing. Save that for the yogis in LA – in the bleak, colder months we need to nourish our bodies, starting with the food we eat. I was lucky enough to be invited to a press dinner, with Karen herself, ready to talk us […]

Patara Review – What We Thought

Patara have just opened their fifth London restaurant on Berners Street, a few doors down from Berners Tavern and The London EDITION so you know the type of customer it will attract, and that the standard will be high. To kick things off one wet Wednesday evening; a champagne and elderflower cocktail for me, a lychee martini for my guest and a bowl of spiced peanuts with flaked coconut to share. The restaurant was fairly quiet – but being mid-January, is no reflection on the restaurant itself, and it certainly wasn’t lacking in atmosphere. The menu was a little overwhelming so […]

Ten Room Sunday Lunch Review – What We Thought

Having received 2 AA Rosettes last autumn, Ten Room at Hotel Café Royal has recently launched a new weekly changing Sunday lunch menu. Of course one of the advantages of the weather being as it is, is that it is perfectly acceptable to go straight from the cocoon that is your bed and out to lunch (if you’re so lucky to sleep that long), where you while away the hours eating good food before returning to bed. And so that’s exactly what we did. The restaurant Ten Room isn’t actually a room; it’s a square within a room borded off by […]

Kanada-Ya Review – What We Thought

I’m no ramen expert but I do love Asian food so a trip to the new(ish) Kanada-Ya ramen bar in Piccadilly was an exciting one. The second site to open, after the success of nearby Giles Street, Kanada-Ya have only upped the hype surrounding their much-loved signature dish. The evening we went was particularly wet and cold but even this wasn’t enough to put off a queue waiting on the street for a table. This is an in’n’out kind of place so the turnover rate for tables is fairly quick, making it an ideal pre-theatre destination. I had moyashi ramen, moyashi […]
