Mews of Mayfair Review

The Handbook went to Mews of Mayfair for a little bit of late night dining. When we arrived at Lancashire Court just off New Bond Street, it had all the bustle of a thieves market; there were people everywhere chatting, smoking and getting ready to move on for their night out – drinks firmly in hand. But as we stepped into the door of Mews of Mayfair, climbed the stairs we instantly felt relaxed – as we left the mayhem below and entered the twinkling, quaint brasserie. With low, warm lights, plenty of candles and a simple décor of thick […]

Bianco43 Review

The pizzeria, Bianco43, have recently opened their third venue in Trafalgar Square, serving Italian cuisine. The venue is a stone’s throw from Charing Cross station and is located in an elegant building with views of the Trafalgar Square monuments. The main dishes comprise mostly of pizza and pasta dishes with a few meat-focussed dishes like Sword Fish Steak, Chicken Breast Fillet and Mixed Seafood Grill. I opted for the Ravioli in the butter and sage sauce but it was unavailable so I went with the Gnocchi with the same sauce instead. It wasn’t unpleasant but definitely lacked any flavour; the […]

St. Ermin’s Spring Tea with unlimited bellinis: Review

Last Sunday The Handbook took a little trip to St Ermin's Hotel in St James for a spot of afternoon tea. With it being the first warm day in months and with sun actually shining we found though that the Tea Lounge was a little oppressive and heavy; purpley walls with white gilding, gave way to a brown carpet covered in beige hexagons, whilst the chairs were a print of yellow, grey and brown – a pattern overload so to say.  And yet the china that the tea was served on was light and white, decorated with delicate blue and […]

The Fable Review

The Fable is part of the Drake and Morgan collection and draws inspiration from Aesop’s fables. The theme isn’t abundantly clear to the untrained eye though but once you start noticing it the subtle touches show through. The most obvious place is in the stairwell which leads between the 3 floors, as the wallpaper is prints of story book pages. A booth in the bottom floor is partially sectioned off by a wall of books and little tags are discreetly hidden around the venue with famous lines from fairy tales written on them. Next to the mezzanine level, carriage wheels […]

Boisdale of Belgravia Review

Not just one for trying the latest restaurants, The Handbook headed to one of Belgravia’s classic establishments – Boisdale of Belgravia for a little bit of jazz and a lot of food. With a bright red exterior, inside Boisdales is a mix of a gentlemen’s’ club mixed with a Highland estate library – it was all dark colours,  patterned rugs, stags and tartan; and the tables were filled with business men, a sprinkling of tourists here and there and even a vicar who seemed to be rather enjoying himself. Throughout the night there was the infamous live jazz, which wasn’t […]

Megaro Bar Review

Hidden away from the hustle and bustle of King’s Cross, underneath the colourfully decorated Megaro Hotel, is Megaro Bar. As soon as you enter the hotel’s restaurant Karpo, you go down the stairs and leave the noise behind as you are welcomed with velvet curtains and dark walls. The whole feel of the venue changes, it has a real speakeasy feel to it, dim lighting and an intimate layout make it perfect for a date. The bar greets you as you enter, to the right is a general seating where you can relax and order food on leather sofas and […]

Q-Jazz Nights at Purl

Earlier this week The Handbook headed to speakeasy Purl for a little bit of Monday night jazz and Quintessentially vodka cocktails! Situated beneath Blandford Street – Purl is a wonderful Victorian-esque den and mishmash of ornate glass tables, low – lighting, chandeliers, wing -back chairs, chintzy lamps, sofas and dark corners perfect for being secretive in on dates; or depending on how your date is going – hiding from them! Their cocktails are wonderfully inventive – forget your usual champagne cocktail or daiquiri, these are masterpieces in comparison. Some are served in picnic hampers with scones, some are charged with […]

Mayfair Pizza Co. Sweet Pizza Review

Take everything you think you know about pizza and re-imagine it. That’s what Mayfair Pizza Co. has done, with interesting results. Mayfair Pizza Co have created a Sweet Pizza menu with fruits and chocolates instead of tomatoes and cheese. The pizzas are ideal for sharing due to their size, (smaller than a regular pizza but still pretty sizeable) and because all that dough makes for a heavy pudding especially if you have already sampled a savoury pizza for your main. The Sweet Pizza menu has 4 options; Wild Strawberry with White Chocolate, Nutella Calzone, Banana Tiramisu and Limoncello & Lime. […]

Far Rockaway Review

The first thing that struck us about Far Rockaway was its size – it is vast, a mix of low tables, high  tables, little tables, trestle tables, sofas and bars, the next thing we  noticed was just how colourful it was. Every inch is decorated, whether it is graffiti art, skateboards lining the bar, neon lit up signs huge murals of world leaders or the album artwork that is plastered all over the bathroom walls.  And yet somehow it wasn’t overwhelming or garish which is always a bonus. The menu is unashamedly American, no fine dining here – just lots […]
