Union Street Café Review – What We Thought

The name is misleading; ‘Union Street Café’ is situated just off Southwark’s Union Street, yes, so that part I understand, but it’s not a café, it’s an Italian restaurant, inspired by Northern Italy’s laid-black glamour. The interior suits the quirky, trendy history of the area and I can’t help thinking anyone walking past who didn’t know it was a Gordon Ramsay venture would have no idea, even once they were inside. Calmer and less IN-YOUR-FACE than you might expect – but then again, none of his 14 London restaurants are like that. Normally I’d say a particular dish was a […]

Michelin-starred dining at Selfridges

The familiar will meet the unfamiliar when Michelin-starred Kei Kobayashi hosts a one-off lunch at Aubaine in Selfridges for not-your-average Monday lunch. Whilst the rest of us are queuing in Pret or microwaving the soup we made at the weekend (thrifty) you could be enjoying a 6-course French/Japanese fusion menu and petits fours. The experience will be even better if you don’t have to return to the office by plumping for the wine pairing option but actually, on second thoughts, spreadsheets might be a whole lot more fun a few glasses later. If you haven’t been, the Aubaine in Selfridge’s […]

Here at The Handbook we’re a sucker for a new afternoon tea, if it’s sandwiches and cakes in miniature form then sign us right up! Joining the afternoon tea brigade is German Gymnasium, who will be launching their afternoon tea tomorrow. When you think of Germany you might not think of cake, you’re more likely to think of beer, bratwurst, pretzels and sauerkraut, but they’re pretty big on their cakes too. Starting at 4pm with the German tradition of Kaffee and Kuchen, the afternoon tea menu is split into two teas; The German, which features sandwiches filled with the likes […]

Where The Pancakes Are Review – What We Thought

I have never dined out on pancake day before – normally I’m at home, sprinkling sugar and squeezing lemons on thin French crepes, professionally tossed if I’m feeling confident – so it takes somewhere pretty special to tempt me to pass full pancake responsibility into someone else’s hands. Enter Where The Pancakes Are, a Pancake Day pop-up in Habitat, King’s Road. Charlotte visited last year and warned me they were good. Very good.  Whilst pancakes are comforting and familiar, there is something innovative and exciting about these guys. How has no one ever thought of topping with hollandaise and poached […]

Theo Randall at the InterContinental Turns 10

Oh to be ten again – not a care in the world, you were in Year Five so you had been elevated to the lofty heights of sitting on the benches in assembly but you didn’t have to do your SATS. You had authority in the playground but you didn’t have the imposing threat of Year Sevens waiting for you in September. Most importantly, everyone knew your Laser Quest party was going to be the best. Somewhere that turns ten this year is InterContinental London Park Lane’s restaurant, Theo Randall at the InterContinental, and whilst they aren’t turning it into […]

The Yorkshire Pudding Feast

Yorkshire puddings, along with roast potatoes are arguably the best part of any Sunday lunch, no, the best part of any Sunday. In fact, let’s be honest along with David Attenborough, Judi Dench and tea, they’re one of our best national treasures. In amongst the whirlwind that was Shrove Tuesday and Valentine’s Day you might have not known that the 7th February was actually National Yorkshire Pudding Day… yep a day dedicated to the warm, carby little bowls. If you missed the day, there is still time to commit carbicide as Reform Social and Grill have a limited edition sweet […]
