New Tales to Tell at The Playboy Club

Easter is over but bunnies are still alive and hopping on Old Park Lane. The Playboy Club is relaunching its iconic Salvatore’s Bar, giving it a whole new lease of life. If walls could talk, The Tale Bar, as it is now known, could certainly tell a story of two. Although The Playboy Club has only been at its current home since 2010, Hef’s empire has been creating a buzz in the city since the first international Playboy casino opened at 45 Park Lane in the Swinging Sixties. In fact, July this year will mark 50 years since it opened. […]

In the second of ‘What to do this Weekend’ series compiled by a Handbook team member it’s Editor, Emily’s turn. With the temperature set to reach a rather nice 25 degrees, Emily’s weekend is going to be all about day time parties, bottomless brunches and swimming at Hampstead Heath.

Summer Gin Terrace at Jumeirah Lowndes Hotel

If your gin of choice is poured from a bright blue glass bottle then Bombay Sapphire’s summer pop-up at Jumeirah will be good news, especially if the hundreds of gins available in most bars leave you spoilt for choice. The most extensive decision you’ll have to make here will be which gin-based cocktail to plump for, followed by whether or not to try mixing your own. The Terrace at the Jumeirah Lowndes Hotel is now bursting with blue and white flowers, just in time for Chelsea Flower Show so will be pretty hard to beat for a gin-based sundowner in […]

Roba Review – What We Thought

New? Brand new – Roba opened 11th April 2016 so we went to see how they’re getting on. Where? 34 Norfolk Place, London W2 1QW www.robarestaurant.co.uk On the menu: Roba is all about doing grilled food right. The simple menu is comprised of snacks (which double up as starters) including mini burgers, beetroot hummus and hot wings, larger dishes such as duck legs with quail eggs or smoked salmon and spinach mousse, and, of course, the grill, made up of a series of meats including sirloin and rib eye steaks, grilled fish and BBQ spare ribs. For those not in […]

Yoobi: Brazil Meets Japan

Nicolas Steiner and Carolina Rodrigues, the team behind London’s first temakeria, Yoobi, are set to open their second site this month in Oxford Circus following on from their first restaurant on Lexington Street.  Drawing on Japanese traditions and flavours of Brazil, the menu will serve up a succinct offering of temaki rolls, maki rolls and sashimi and of course plenty of cocktails. Giving a nod to the Rio de Janeiro Olympics happening later in the summer, there’ll be new Brazilian-influenced dishes such as spicy amazon salmon temaki spiced with North Amazonian Bicinho pepper and seared Pincaña Temaki. You can also get […]

St Clements Brunch Review – What We Thought

New? Now a couple of years old, St Clements is a staple feature in the weekends of Parsons Green residents. Where? 201 New Kings Road, Parsons Green, SW6 4SR www.stclementscafe.co.uk  First Impressions: As chic yet unfussy as you’d expect for any brunch cafe in South West London, the main feature of St Clements is the counter, piled high with seriously tempting-looking cakes and pastries. Populated almost exclusively by girls in their activewear, with a few couples in their mid-twenties and a couple of buggies outside, St Clements is clearly a failsafe meeting spot for locals at any time of day. The […]

Taco Takeover in Soho and Shoreditch

We really love Mexican food. And we really love tacos. The best thing about them is building them yourself. The challenge that we set ourselves to see just how much we can cram into the soft floury tortilla never fails to amuse. Grated cheese? Er, yes. Guacamole? More is more. Latin-Caribbean bar Barrio share our taco appreciation, so much so that they are having a Taco Takeover, with a different guest chef each month doing tacos their way. Beginning with The Roadery (British Street Food Award finalists), these guys are putting a British spin on the taco with their Braco […]

Boundary’s Summer Rooftop Launches

Another day, another rooftop and frankly we can’t get enough off them. Today it’s all about Boundary who is shaking off its winter coating, saying good bye to its Alpine- themed menu and saying bonjour to a Provençal-style summer offering. Taking inspiration from the Mediterranean, the rooftop will serve a light, fresh all-day menu. Think salads, small plates such as Ortiz anchovies and ricotta, food from the Robata grill, including native lobster with garlic and parsley butter and sharing dishes like plateau de Fruits de Mer. Peter Prescott and Doug Wregg from Les Caves des Pyrene (one of the UK’s […]

Taking Rooftop Bars Up a Notch

As we march on towards summer, the rooftop bars keep opening and this Thursday will see the opening of Notch on the fourth floor of London Marriott Hotel Park Lane. You might have heard of #Roofnic last year, well they’ve done away with the garden theme and this year they’ve gone for an industrial look. Design team DENLDN (other projects include Street Feast and Lima) have created a Williamsburg Warehouse meets Berlin Yard Sale look. Reclaimed school science tables will sit on Edwardian floorboards alongside industrial lighting, scaffolding and rooftop swings. Japanese street food will be served all day by […]

Proms On The Roof at Kensington Roof Garden

We can’t wait for summer; basking in the sunshine in London parks, sipping Pimm’s, finding the season’s soundtrack that will forever serve as as reminder of that year’s summer events. But summer doesn’t need to be all about week long festivals which leave you questioning your sanity and warm beer in the park (although we’ll most likely be doing both). Sometimes you just want serenity and escapism from the steamy clutches of the London summer season, and luckily for you, Proms on the Roof will be taking place on 11th May at the Kensington Roof Gardens, offering an evening of culture, music […]

Al Fresco Italian Rooftop Bar Opens for Summer

Summer in the city isn’t complete without whiling away the hours basking in the sun, a few floors above street level. If you are anything like us and head to the nearest rooftop bar as soon as the clock strikes 5.30pm, you’ll want one to stash away for when the snow (!) finally leaves us alone and lets us enjoy Spring. Opening on Sunday for the whole Summer, the rooftop at Bird of Smithfield is being transformed into a Milanese terrazza and the best bit? Complimentary Aperol Spritz’s for one and all. Free drinks aside, there are multiple reasons why the […]
