5 of the Best Scandinavian Restaurants

It was over lunch at Modern Pantry in Finsbury Square that The Handbook’s thoughts turned Scandinavian. The simple forms and clean lines of the recently opened restaurant’s interior – walnut tables, hand-blown lamps – were inspired by head chef Anna Hansen’s familial roots in Denmark, resulting in the Danish-influenced modern style of the dining room. Not only did The Handbook reimagine the design of our home living room… But we thought of the variety of Scandi-spired cuisine available in the capital, especially with Christmas coming up. Here’s our top five restaurants, cafes and bakeries in the capital:

Le Bab To Open

The kebab, the saviour (or hidden demon) of a night out, the food that you go to when you really need a hit of meat and carbs. Well not anymore, just like burgers and hotdogs, the humble kebab is being given a renaissance with the opening of Le Bab in Kingly Court early next year… sorry you do have to wait a bit. The pair behind this revolution are Stephen Tozer and Ed Brunet who discovered a love for wood-fired cooking and charcoal-grilled meat whilst at university. Since then Stephen has been travelling to collect inspiration whilst Ed has been […]

Sartoria Reopens

As we head towards the end of the year, things are starting off for Savile Row’s Sartoria restaurant as they reopen after their refurbishment. Italian chef, Francesco Mazzei (previously L’Anima) is taking up the role of chef patron and his new all-day menu will be inspired by his home region of Calabria and the surrounding area of Italy.  Highlights are said to include Eggs Purgatorio – baked eggs, spicy tomato and n’duja sauce with crostini; Astice Sibaryta – warm lobster salad ‘sybarita’ and  Baccalá marinato alla liquirizia (home-cured baccalá marinated in liquorice.  If you’re looking for sugar slump kick or […]

Skylon Review – What We Thought

Skylon in the Royal Festival Hall have welcomed Tom Cook to their kitchen. Despite his surname instilling a strong sense of confidence, Cook has proved himself at Le Pont de la Tour and Le Gavroche to name but a few so when I was invited down a few weeks into his new job I was excited to see (but mainly taste) how much he has settled in. Thankfully, once inside the ugly concrete box that is the Royal Festival Hall, floor to ceiling windows mean Embankment is the view you get, and it’s not a bad one. Sitting in the […]

M Victoria Street Opens

2016 is set to be Victoria’s year, the area known primarily for its station and the Billy Elliott theatre is getting an injection of new restaurants, with the likes of Jason Atherton and Ross Shonhan moving in next year. Before all of that though, before 2016, tomorrow in fact, sees the opening of M Victoria Street. Having opened M Threadneedle Street last year in the City, Martin Williams is now opening his second restaurant with a rather exceptional team joining him.  Michael Reid (previously Le Gavroche, Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, Vue de Monde and The Skinny Duck) will be taking on […]

Winterville at Victoria Park

‘Tis the season for hot toddies, ice-skating, candy floss and fairground rides! Winterville at Victoria Park is the ever-so-slightly understated (and therefore edgy) East London festive experience returning for it’s second season and we think you need to make it part of your weekend plans.  If you’re more familiar with the slightly larger, centrally located Christmas experience then imagine smaller crowds, great-quality street food and cabaret, comedy and club nights. A Snow White Christmas pantomime is one for the kids, whilst adults can cradle their sides at the raucous and critically-acclaimed Sh*t-faced Shakespeare (where one cast member of a classic […]
