12 Restaurants and Bars That Opened in August

Tomorrow is the officially the start of autumn, but rather than feel sad about the end of summer, let’s take a little look back at the restaurants and bars that have opened this month, from proper kebabs, to second offerings from the likes of Blanchette and the third Rum Kitchen. August was a busy month… Monmouth Kitchen Following on from the opening of the May Fair Kitchen, Monmouth Kitchen is the next opening from the Edwardian Hotels London team. Serving up a mix of Italian and Peruvian tapas with dishes including smoked lamb cutlets with red anticucho and pan-fried salmon […]

Amorino’s GelaTea Review – what we thought

New? Amorino boutique was opened in 2002 by two Italians who wanted to bring authentic Italian gelato to France. The Fulham Broadway shop we visited opened just last month. Where? 8 Fulham Broadway, SW6 1AA www.amorino.com    On the menu: Putting a cool Italian spin on an indulgent British tradition, Afternoon GelaTea is a selection of macaroses and gelato roses plus a selection of drinks. First Impressions: It’s a neat little café, the vats of gelato in different colours and patterns look tempting as I make my way to the back to be seated. The Look: A casual gelato café with a tempting selection […]

Crisp Sandwich Speakeasy Pop-Up

Question: What do bacon and tomato ketchup, roast chicken and mayonnaise and sausage and brown sauce have in common? Yes they are all sandwich fillings but that’s not the answer we’re looking for. Answer: They are all whacky and wonderful new flavours of Walkers crisps. A bit less whacky than the cajun squirrel and chilli and chocolate we have seen in the past but no fewer points awarded for inventiveness, the crisps have been created with Heinz, hence the sauces in each flavour. Who doesn’t love a condiment? It wouldn’t be very Handbook of us to just tell you about […]

Free Cabaret, Comedy and Music with Live at Zedel

Weekends in London don’t come cheap. Post-work drinks, Saturday brunch, some kind of day out then probably dinner in the evening. Not to mention another brunch on Sunday and maybe a cinema trip keep the Sunday blues at bay. What if we were to tell you that next weekend will be a whole lot cheaper thanks to Soho’s Brasserie Zédel? Listen up.   Known for its live entertainment, Zédel is hosting a whole weekend of music, theatre, cabaret and comedy – and it’s absolutely free to attend. Taking place on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th September, the weekend is marking the launch […]

Skylon Festival of Love Tasting Menu Review – What We Thought

New? Skylon isn’t new but I was excited to return after a memorable meal back in February (read the review here), soon after the appointment of Head Chef, Tom Cook. Getting involved in Southbank Centre’s Festival of Love, a romantic and indulgent five-course tasting menu is available until the end of August, and what we were there to try. Where? Skylon, Royal Festival Hall, Belvedere Road, Southbank, SE1 8XX, www.skylon-restaurant.co.uk First Impressions: Royal Festival Hall is very possibly my least favourite building in London but it is the Festival of Love after all, so I’ll love to hate it. The […]

Fumo: Italian in Covent Garden

So it seems as if summer is making a final effort, just as we’re about to go into autumn – because from 1st September we are officially in autumn, but rather than getting down that soon we’ll be wearing all the layers again, we’re going to be looking forward to the opening of Fumo which will open on St Martin’s Lane at the start of September. It’s the next restaurant from the multi-award winning San Carlo restaurant group. They’re the team behind restaurants such as Signor Sassi in Knightsbridge and Cicchetti in Piccadilly and Covent Garden. With 130 covers, Fumo, […]

Theatrical Japanese Cocktails at ROKA

If you’re unfamiliar with the word ‘Kabuki’ don’t worry, we didn’t know what it meant either. A classical Japanese performance combining dance and drama, it’s most easily recognised by the distinctive make up worn by performers. UNESCO even count it as an Intangible Cultural Heritage so it’s worth knowing about. You may not have known that but one thing you should really know by know is that anything, be it cultural, geographical or historical, can be used to inspire a menu thanks to a creative chef somewhere out there itching to shake things up.  Award-winning Japanese restaurant, ROKA, is celebrating […]

Blanchette East Review – What We Thought

New? Brand spanking new, Blanchette’s Eastern venture opened its doors earlier this month, following on from the success of the original Soho site by brothers Maxime, Malik and Yannis. Where? 204 Brick Lane, Shoreditch, E1 6SA www.blanchettebricklane.co.uk  First Impressions: Brick Lane is a long lane. Past the seemingly endless kebab shops and curry houses but not as far as the infamous Beigel Bake, Blanchette East sits unassumingly but confident near Bethnal Green Road, the soft sage green frontage and hungry lingering people the only clue of what’s inside. We were greeted like friends (a standard of service that was maintained all […]

Daybreaker: Start Your Day With A Boat Party

We’re all about making the most of our days, especially at the moment whilst we eke out the last few weeks of summer before it’s dark when we wake up and dark when we go home. Great. So shake up your morning routine. You could go to that restaurant you’ve been meaning to try for ages but haven’t had the chance to, for breakfast. Or you could go to the park for that boot camp or just get up half an hour early to actually finish that book you’ve been reading for the last couple of months. You could do […]

Cocktail Masterclasses With a Michelin-Starred Twist

Everyone loves a masterclass. Even more so when it involves cocktail making because cocktail making obviously leads to cocktail drinking. Wild Honey, the Michelin-starred Mayfair restaurant known for its wood-panelled dining area and outstanding food (the Michelin star does hint at that), is hosting a new series of intimate cocktail masterclasses, The Magnificent 7, so-called because there is only room for 7 cocktail-loving guests to be seated at the bar. The classes will be held every Monday evening to make the start of the week that little bit more bearable, commencing Monday 5th September. Ready to share his knowledge, resident […]
