Monica Galetti at The Gherkin

Hands up is you can tell me the actual name of The Gherkin. No, that isn’t actually its real name. Any takers? No? Well it’s actually called 30 St Mary Axe. There we go you learn something new every day. We can also tell you, that from now until the 11th of February, Searcys | The Gherkin has a special set menu designed by Monica Galetti (there’s a name you should definitely know), star of BBC’s Master Chef The Professionals. Over seen by chef Renee Miller the menu will be full of winter offerings including black curry scallop, basmati, white miso and […]

Sanderson Nourish Menu Review – What We Thought

For the second year, The Sanderson have enlisted the expert help of nutritionist Karen Cummings-Parker to devise a menu made up of dishes that pack a nutritional punch. Far from the January detoxes many of us are convinced need to happen in the early months of the new year, Karen insists post-Christmas isn’t the time for detoxing. Save that for the yogis in LA – in the bleak, colder months we need to nourish our bodies, starting with the food we eat. I was lucky enough to be invited to a press dinner, with Karen herself, ready to talk us […]

12 of London’s Best Breakfasts

For the English, breakfast is a patriotic affair – there’s a reason the beloved fry-up is called a ‘Full English’ and not just a ‘Full Breakfast’. Whether fuelling a busy day ahead or an attempt to rid you of your hangover, there’s not much the humble fried egg/bacon/beans combo can’t fix. In celebration of Breakfast Week (24th-30th January), we have rounded up London’s best breakfasts; from the iconic greasy spoon to the civilised New York-style brasserie, we have it covered. And, of course, we’ve included a few Antipodean brunches for those of us who are late-risers – or like to think […]

Jason Atherton Opens Sosharu

This March, The Social Company will be opening their seventh London restaurant and this time it’ll be in Clerkenwell. Following on from the likes of Berners Tavern, Pollen Street Social and City Social, Sosharu will be a collaboration between Jason Atherton and Executive Head Chef Alex Craciun (previously sous chef at Pollen Street Social). Unlike anything Atherton has done before, Sosharu is the next step for The Social Company and will see the restaurant serving up casual yet refined Japanese cuisine using seasonal British ingredients. To ensure that Alex knew everything there was to know about Japanese cuisine he did […]

Patara Fitzrovia Review – What We Thought

Patara have just opened their fifth London restaurant on Berners Street, a few doors down from Berners Tavern and The London EDITION so you know the type of customer it will attract, and that the standard will be high. To kick things off one wet Wednesday evening; a champagne and elderflower cocktail for me, a lychee martini for my guest and a bowl of spiced peanuts with flaked coconut to share. The restaurant was fairly quiet – but being mid-January, is no reflection on the restaurant itself, and it certainly wasn’t lacking in atmosphere. The menu was a little overwhelming so […]

9 of the Cosiest Library Bars

Forget cosy, wood panelled pubs and trendy, cosmopolitan wine bars. This winter, the place to curl up with a nice hot toddy is, believe it or not, the library. No longer the preserve of bookish geeks, pottering pensioners and panicky students, more and more of London’s prestigious hotels and bars are opening swanky, book-filled watering holes, allowing visitors to partake in some seriously scholarly drinking.

PR That Packs a Punch

It is no secret that restaurants and venues would struggle without a good PR company. Word of mouth is a wonderful thing and don’t get us wrong, we love stumbling upon a hidden gem before it’s splashed all over Instagram, but when PR companies act as the ‘word of mouth’, the word is spread much more effectively. Here at The Handbook, we constantly keep you up to date with all the latest news; venue openings, refurbs and new chefs that make somewhere worth a visit – we work closely with PRs to keep us in the loop, so we can keep […]

Champagne with Leonardo DiCaprio

Going to the cinema it’s a classic date, albeit a little clichéd, unless that is you’re going to the cinema in a hotel and you’re drinking Champagne at the same time.  The popular Film & Fizz series is returning to One Aldwych on Fridays and Saturdays, this time in partnership with Curzon Cinema meaning that guests can expect to watch films, some still on general release, from the comfort of the hotel’s 30-seat screening room and with a glass of Lallier Grande Réserve Champagne – beats the supersized Diet Coke.  Films include Joy, Leonardo DiCaprio’s latest, The Revenant  and Youth […]
