St James’ Board Game Afternoon Tea Review – what we thought

Toy store giant, Hamleys, has partnered with luxury 5 star hotel, St James Hotel and Club, to create an afternoon tea ideal for adults and children alike. The tea has all your favourite elements of sandwiches and scones but the cakes are where things get interesting with a selection of board game themed pieces like cake dice, edible scrabble letters, chocolate chess pieces, shortbread dominoes and chocolate Monopoly hats. The hotel itself is lovely and has a sparkle of old English glamour about it but the service in the actual dining room was a little lacking. Twice our waiter came […]

Frenchie: From Paris to London

When Greg Marchand opened Frenchie in Paris’ garment district in 2009 it was to high acclaim, with both Parisian and international critics praising it. In the following years came Frenchie Bar à Vins, Frenchie To Go and, at the end of last year, a new wine shop. Now Greg, joined by his wife Marie, will be opening their first site outside of Paris and it just so happens to be in Covent Garden. Opening on Henrietta Street next week, Frenchie will be echoing its Parisian counterparts and will serve up modest, generous but precise dishes all influenced by Greg’s travels […]

The Courthouse Hotel’s Private Cinema Club

A few hundred metres from the huge cinema in Leicester Square lies a cinema much more low-key… and much more luxurious. Battle your way through the tourists and up the regal steps of The Courthouse Hotel. You may have heard of their calming Sanook Spa (we reviewed it back in October) and their wintery Soho Ski Terrace but we’ll be impressed if you know about their state of the art cinema room. Newly refurbished, the cinema boasts leather seats and tactile suede walls and cult classics shown every Saturday evening – Chicago, The Breakfast Club and Breakfast at Tiffany’s are […]

Panoramic River Views at Your Party

If we had £700,000 to spend on a refurbishment, our pokey flats would be unrecognisable. So much so that they’d have a new address and actually wouldn’t be the same building at all. But if you’re a venue and events space, spending large amounts on a refurb is much more realistic expenditure so when The River Rooms underwent a makeover in 2013 it enhanced the space to make it an ideal contemporary blank canvas space for a whole range of events. Whether corporate or private, the team at The River Rooms work with you to plan your ideal event. Menus […]

Tiny Leaf Opens: Zero Waste

If 2015 was the year that we all got healthy and fell further in love with the avocado and acai bowls, then 2016 is the year that we need to be properly educated on food waste and how we can cut the 6.7 million tonnes of food that is said to be ending up in UK landfill sites every year. Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, of course, brought the matter to the attention of the masses in his programme, ‘Hugh’s War on Waste’, and there are companies out there selling delicious condiments made from ugly or wasted food, such Rubies in the Rubble […]

Sunday Roast at Rabbit

What do you get when you have three brothers, equally as talented, but in different fields? Enter the Gladwin brothers: one’s a farmer (so in the ‘field’ itself), one worked in hospitality and the other’s a chef. With an upbringing on a Sussex farm, the natural step for the guys was to go into business together, and the result? British tapas restaurant The Shed in Notting Hill and Rabbit on King’s Road. A true British restaurant doesn’t truly earn it’s stripes until it adds a roast to it’s Sunday menu – as Rabbit have done. Forget spending hours stewing, sweating and scrubbing […]

Nadler Victoria Review – What We Thought

This year is set to be Victoria’s year; no longer will it just be synonymous with Wicked and the station and no longer will it be that area that you tend to just pass through on your way to somewhere else. Why? Because later this year Nova will open. Said to be Europe’s largest square, it’ll provide luxury residential apartments (at prices rumoured to rival and exceed One Hyde Park) and 18 restaurants including offerings from Jason Atherton and D&D London. M Restaurants have already opened their second restaurant in Victoria and Robert Nadler has opened his third hotel just […]

7 Tropical Hangouts

It’s all very well sitting directly under a heater, tucked under a blanket trying to convince ourselves that al fresco works in winter, but unless you are actually in a ski resort, to be honest we’d rather save the outdoor drinking for summer. Save yourself the thousand-plus miles (and thousand-odd pounds) and visit the tropics of London instead. It’s Tiki bars, cocktail umbrellas and fresh flavours galore with these totally tropical venues.

Galvin HOP: A Pub de Luxe

Head to Spitalfields Market and you’re likely to find Galvin Café A Vin, well you would have, because now it’s been given a transformation and turned into Galvin HOP – a Galvin Pub de Luxe. Of course it’s not your average City boozer, there’s no mismatched kitsch carpet or red velvet stools for starters. Instead you’ll find a front terrace for summer months, new flooring, classic motifs but in a modern style, tiled walls and four large copper tanks, three of which will be sitting above the bar holding unpasteurised Pilsner Urquell. Accompanying this will be bottled and canned craft […]

8 of the Most Hidden Speakeasies

A few years ago, going for a drink in London meant stumbling into an old-man boozer or an outdated wine bar. But now the speakeasy, a different breed of bar based around atmospheric drinking dens of Prohibition America, have swept the city by storm, bringing formidable cocktails and an unbeatable array of spirits to the table. Here are 8 of London’s best speakeasies:
