London’s Cosiest Winter Pop-Ups

The dreary, dark days are really setting in now, so what better way to lift spirits than a welcoming, warm winter pop-up offering something fun, festive and usually booze filled (The Handbook reminds you to drink responsibly…). Here’s our guide to the best for 2015:

DF Mexico Review – What We Thought

Put simply, DF Mexico is great fun. The atmosphere is buzzing, the food and drink is delightful, the décor is exciting and the staff are lovely. As soon as we stepped foot in DF Mexico’s Tottenham Court Road branch, we were struck by its kooky design and eye-catching décor. Laid out like an old-fashioned diner – complete with stainless steel chairs, vibrantly coloured benches and vintage, illuminated signs – the walls of the restaurant are covered in striking ornaments and paintings, many of which, it turns out, were produced exclusively for DF by Latin American artists! This contrast between the […]

Chi Kitchen review – what we thought

Shopping on Oxford Street may strike fear into even the steeliest of London hearts, let alone in the run up to Christmas but there is something about to make it slightly more alluring; the opening of Chi Ki. The pan-Asian restaurant is tucked away at the back of the ground floor of Debenhams providing a peaceful oasis away from the hectic activity outside. The team behind Thai institution, Mango Tree, has created this exclusive concept which will also be launching in Debenhams Birmingham. The menu is diverse with all-day dining options, including breakfast, which is influenced by Thai, Chinese, Malaysian, […]

3rd Red Dog Saloon Opens

When it comes to proper American BBQ done low and slow, the sort that you just have to get stuck into, away with the napkins and manners, just finger licking good food; when it comes to all of that, then you need Red Dog Saloon. The reason we’re telling you this? Because tomorrow sees the opening of their third site. They’ve had their way with Holborn and Clapham and now they are heading to Soho. Opening on Berwick Street, it’ll be following in the footsteps of its sibling restaurants, American BBQ cooked slow and low for sixteen hours, slow roasted […]

Cinema in the Snow

We’re all dreaming of a white Christmas, but with Storm Barney hitting our shores, the chances are we’ll probably have a mild, rainy windy Christmas, sorry to drop that one on you, I’m not quite full of the Christmas cheer yet. Unless that is you go to the 20th Century Theatre, because Pop-Up Screens are back and they are bringing the residents of Notting Hill and beyond Cinema in the Snow. Running from the 11th to the 23rd December guests will enter through a magic wardrobe and rather than being disappointed as we were when we were children when we […]

Bounce Shoreditch review – what we thought

Bounce Shoreditch has recently opened following the success of the first UK ping pong bar in Farringdon, so The Handbook went down to check it out. Located underground the reception strikes me as a bar meets bowling alley kind if vibe, with trendy graffiti on the walls as the receptionists check people in for their bookings. We went on a Sunday evening and the place was already heaving with an energetic buzz about the place.Everything is open plan with 17 bespoke ping pong tables spread around the venue with seating areas in between, though a space by the bar may […]

Cinnamon Soho review – what we thought

The third venue from Vivek Singh (after The Cinnamon Club and Cinnamon Kitchen) has a lot to live up to with rave reviews from its sister sites. Located off Oxford Street, it is situated on the bustling Kingly Street so has location on its side. The food is Indian with a fantastically unique British twist so you can expect dishes like Roganjosh Shepherd’s Pie and Garam Masala Sticky Toffee Pudding although I tended to stick with the more classic dishes. I shied away from the traditional starters in lieu of the Masala Corn Fritter with coriander chutney listed under the […]

5 of the Best Spots in London for Eggs

One dish and ingredient-inspired restaurants have taken London by storm the last couple of years. It all started with the burger but since we’ve seen meatball, roast potato, hot dog and kebab dedicated restaurants appear.
