Paperworks Winter Fun

Forget Dalston, it’s all about the Elephant these days. Corsica Studios’ venue, The Paperworks, put the sun into summer earlier this year in Elephant and Castle and now it’s back from tomorrow with an all-weather make-over with heaters galore, fire-pits, blankets, plush pallet booths and, more importantly, a roof! Entitled Smorgasbord, the new winter programme features revamped bars and menus with the back deck being transformed into new drinking den the Hobo Chang Bar for Margaritas, Slammers and Mescals and there’s also a Hot Toddy bar serving winter cocktails, spiced ciders and rums. Food comes courtesy of street-food traders and […]

Hunting Without the Gathering with York & Albany

Grab your shooting jacket and head to York & Albany’s winter cabin this week, where you will be treated to a hunting lodge complete with wild game and plenty of fun. Set in the cosy courtyard of the restaurant and inspired by the age of hunting grounds of the surrounding Regent’s Park, you will be in for a rural retreat with the added bonus of not having to leave the confines of London. Combine this with outdoor heaters, scented candles and live music and this whole hunting thing suddenly became a whole load more enticing. Tweed, tartan and taxidermy will […]

Tulse Hill Hotel

Boutique hotels are branching out! Into South East London to be precise. Welcome to Tulse Hill Hotel officially open this week in a former 19 century public house. The new venue features a nine bedroom hotel plus a destination restaurant and bar and landscaped garden and terrace out back. We see this place coming into its own on the weekend for those South West Londoners who can’t face schlepping all the way into town when they don’t actually have to go to work but still fancy themselves a bit too hip for the local Wetherspoons. Yup, they’ll like the Art […]

Festive Treats at Winterville

After weeks of speculation, the first inklings of the food on offer at Winterville has been released and here at The Handbook, we are not disappointed. For those that haven’t already heard Winterville, which is taking place in Victoria Park, seeks to re-boot the festive format combining outdoor ice rinks, huge ferris wheels and horse drawn carriages with spiegeltents (Dutch travelling dance halls), roller discos and craft beers. No Christmas fair is complete without a mandatory food market going on at the side and Winterville’s will certainly not leave you wanting for more. With Voodoo Ray’s famous pizza slices and […]

Bocconcino Restaurant

Mayfair’s Berkeley Square and its surrounds is packed with every permutation of posh restaurant going but what if you just fancy a pizza? Well as of next month Berkeley Street is saying ‘bienvenuto’ to brand new restaurant, Bocconcino.  The new venue is the brainchild of restaurateur Mikhail Gokhner who was inspired by the vibrant flavours he experienced while visiting Forte dei Marmi, a picturesque seaside town in Northern Tuscany. Visitors to the new joint can expect a traditional menu of authentic wood-fired pizzas including the classic Marinara, indulgent Calzone Four Cheeses and Gorgonzola and Pear alongside homemade pasta such as […]

A Slice of Viking at Valhalla Vodka Bar

If you liked Chris Hemsworth donning his Viking gear in Thor then make sure you head to Sky Lounge where from 25th November, the terrace is being transformed into the Vahalla Vodka Bar. For those that are not yet fluent in the Viking tongue, Vahalla means ‘heaven’, making it the perfect place for any Scandinavian Gods and Goddesses (or those of you that just fancy yourself a slice of Viking). The bar, which you might have already guessed is Viking themed will be a weatherproof pop-up with hunter-gatherer style animal hides and mugs of hot cider served from a freshly […]

Frescobaldi London

Following my namesake and having spent the summer inter-railing around Italy exploring Florence, Venice and Rome, the opening of Frescobaldi, the first standalone restaurant in the UK from the Frescobaldi family was one that I was not going to miss. And despite spending three weeks, exploring every nook and cranny of Florence, the closest I got to Tuscany where the food is inspired from, was the wine I had been sampling, so I was looking forward to a taste of it. Whilst most reviewers have described the food at Frescobaldi’s as authentic Italian (which it is), there is much more […]

Take a Grand Tour with Pennethorne’s

Whether through the pages of David Nicholls latest novel or splashed across our television screens in period dramas, there is no doubt about it, there is penchant for Europe in the air. And whilst Paris, Florence and Rome are not too far away, it is always nice to know that we can find a little slice of our favourites cities in London- especially in regards to our bank balances. For this reason, we were delighted to hear of the opening of Pennethorne’s Café and Bar at Somerset House on 28th November, which promises a menu inspired by the Grand Tours […]

Aqua Shard Brunch

Chances are by now you’ve been to Aqua Shard for drinks, but how about brunch? This isn’t just any brunch though this is the quaffing Champagne whilst eating lobster benedict and taking in the views from the 32nd level sort of brunch.   We headed up to the dizzying heights last weekend, make sure you get a reservation, by the time we left the queues were starting to snake around the corner and when it’s windy and cold that’s not fun for anyone.  Once upstairs you’re whisked inside through the glass doors, and hit with staggering views of London, it really […]

The Ivy Market Grill

The Ivy is getting a younger sister this month with the arrival of The Ivy Market Grill, an all -day cafe and restaurant in Covent Garden, which is said to be a home from home… just with less Ikea furniture, no empty takeaway boxes on a Sunday morning and a better alcohol supply. Taking the magic of The Ivy but making it a little more accessible, The Ivy Market Grill is for those who want a bite to eat whether it is breakfast, elevenses (which will include crumpets and teacakes!), pre or post theatre, tea or supper but don’t have […]
