The Lancaster’s Afternoon Tea

When it’s this sort of weather there is nothing better than to get out of the cold and set yourself up with good company and better food. With this in mind we headed over to The Lancaster who have recently launched their new afternoon tea. Served in the lounge – which is the perfect setting with dark wooden panels, an open fire and sofas you can just sink into- the tea is classic yet with little contemporary twists and nostalgic sweet inspired cakes. First we were brought Novus loose teas and a mini sand timer so that each type could […]

Kouzu Review

Kouzu the recently opened Japanese restaurant in Belgravia, is headed in the kitchen by the former founding chef of Zuma, and is truly something special. How special? So special that head chef Kyoichi Kai has carefully selected the all-Japanese kitchen team which feature some of London’s most talented and celebrated Japanese chefs. As soon you walk through the imposing doors to the refurbished bank you are instantly welcomed by the dramatic light feature above your head which illuminates the spiralling staircase to the first floor. The service at a restaurant can really make or break an experience and we were […]

Festive Treats at Winterville

After weeks of speculation, the first inklings of the food on offer at Winterville has been released and here at The Handbook, we are not disappointed. For those that haven’t already heard Winterville, which is taking place in Victoria Park, seeks to re-boot the festive format combining outdoor ice rinks, huge ferris wheels and horse drawn carriages with spiegeltents (Dutch travelling dance halls), roller discos and craft beers. No Christmas fair is complete without a mandatory food market going on at the side and Winterville’s will certainly not leave you wanting for more. With Voodoo Ray’s famous pizza slices and […]

Frescobaldi London

Following my namesake and having spent the summer inter-railing around Italy exploring Florence, Venice and Rome, the opening of Frescobaldi, the first standalone restaurant in the UK from the Frescobaldi family was one that I was not going to miss. And despite spending three weeks, exploring every nook and cranny of Florence, the closest I got to Tuscany where the food is inspired from, was the wine I had been sampling, so I was looking forward to a taste of it. Whilst most reviewers have described the food at Frescobaldi’s as authentic Italian (which it is), there is much more […]

Take a Grand Tour with Pennethorne’s

Whether through the pages of David Nicholls latest novel or splashed across our television screens in period dramas, there is no doubt about it, there is penchant for Europe in the air. And whilst Paris, Florence and Rome are not too far away, it is always nice to know that we can find a little slice of our favourites cities in London- especially in regards to our bank balances. For this reason, we were delighted to hear of the opening of Pennethorne’s Café and Bar at Somerset House on 28th November, which promises a menu inspired by the Grand Tours […]

The Handbook Meets…Michael Riemenschneider

You know your restaurant is a success when you have to relocate to a bigger venue to meet demand, just as Michael Riemenschneider had to when his restaurant Canvas outgrew its Marylebone home and headed to Chelsea. We caught up with the Swiss-born chef to talk about family recipes, desert island dishes and working with Heston Blumenthal.  Tell us about the ‘Design your own menu’? Essentially we are offering the most personalised, modern menu, it’s an a la carte tasting menu so you can choose your number of courses from one course up to twenty one and we scale them […]

Après-Skate at Fortnum’s Lodge

Forget après-ski, this year it is all about après-skate and Fortnum’s Lodge is the perfect place in which to practice. Based in the west wing of Somerset House, Fortnum’s Lodge will be on guard to provide the people with London with a fun and festive winter retreat- you don’t even have to have tickets for the ice rink to get in on the action, meaning no unwanted falls…at least not from the ice itself- we can’t say the same after a few of their cocktail tipples! Open from 10am until late, The Lodge, is a family friendly restaurant where you […]

Christabel’s Mad Hatter Brunch

You must have heard about Christabel by now? You know the catering and events genius who also hosts her own supper clubs and brunches? Well now she is heading over to Notting Hill to host her Mad Hatter Brunch at the Little Yellow Door – the pop-up based on a fictional flat share. Taking place on Saturday 29th November (between 1pm-6pm), rather than fall down the rabbit hole like Alice, guests just have to knock on the elusive yellow door, where they will be able to sit down to crispy bacon with maple syrup, scrambled eggs with spicy honey and […]

HotBox

You know what is great in cold weather like this? BBQ street food inspired by the Deep South, obviously and an internal heater but you know that might be a bit harder.  Good news on the food front though because opening later this month is the first permanent restaurant from BBQ street food smokers, HotBox. If you think you’ve heard the name before it’s because they’ve been doing the rounds and you’ve probably seen them at Street Feast’s Dalston Yard, Hawker House and Battersea Power Station and now they have chosen the East End, Commercial Street to be exact, as […]
