Ma’Pluckers Afternoon Tea

Afternoon tea brings with it certain etiquette. According to Debrett’s, tea should be poured first, with milk only ever added afterwards; the spoon should be placed on the saucer once stirred; never slurp and never hold your pinkie in the air. This is all good and well but standards may slip a little when chicken restaurant Ma’Plucker bring their afternoon tea to town; finger licking will be involved. A nice change from the abundance of formal afternoon teas across the city, Soho are welcoming Ma’Plucker to the very aptly named Beak Street. Boozy iced teas will wash down your chicken […]

Rudie’s review – what we thought

Rudie’s has travelled all the way from Jamaica to drop down in Dalston where the new venue is primely located on the corner, a few minutes’ walk from Dalston Kingsland. Upon arrival we were greeted with a wall of smoke from the corner open plan kitchen, although the people inside seemed unaffected it wasn’t the best of starts. Once inside it eased off, or we adjusted but either way we settled in fine and started perusing the cocktail menu.   For such a new restaurant, it was quickly brimming with people, perhaps partially due to the great coverage it has […]

Christmas Unwrapped Afternoon Tea

Best meal of the year? Christmas lunch… obviously. The roast potatoes, the turkey, the pigs in blankets, the fact that you are able to eat so much and no one looks at you in disgust. But what if we were to tell you there was another way? What if we were to tell you that this year the InterContinental Park Lane are reimagining the traditional Christmas lunch in the form of afternoon tea – two of our favourite things. Launching on the 22nd November Christmas Unwrapped, which is served in the Wellington Lounge, uses the key ingredients, scents and flavours […]

Brasserie Chavot Review – What We Thought

In 2013, Eric Chavot opened the Michelin-starred French restaurant Brasserie Chavot on Conduit Street and so following on from The Handbook’s Meeting with Eric, we went to check it out. The restaurant is typically French with deep red banquettes, ornate chandeliers, monochrome floors, mirrored walls and black polished bars, it’s elegant yet relaxed.  The menu includes dishes such as grilled mackerel and potato salad, tartare de saumon and cassoulet de canard et cochon. We started with a glass of Ruinart Champagne and olives…all 7 of them.  Never mind though, with the amount of food we had coming, we probably didn’t need […]

The Squiffy Picnic at Cahoots

Barge through the busy streets of Soho and emerge in the ever-vibrant Kingly Court, home of Pizza Pilgrims, The Rum Kitchen, Señor Ceviche, The Detox Kitchen… The list goes on, and includes Cahoots. This 1940s themed bar isn’t easy to find, and even when you do you don’t just walk straight in. Greeted by a stationmaster in full costume and full character – accent ‘n all – if you fit the brief (play it cool and go with the flow) you will be ushered down a wooden escalator and arrive in a disused tube station, inspired on the usage of […]
