The Red Lemon

Welcome to the Red Lemon, situated at the cooler less sanitised end of Notting Hill on the corner with All Saints Road. It’s headed up by Alli Kyle and head chef David Green (Dean Street Townhouse, Hoxton Grill and Harvey Nichols’ 5th Floor Restaurant) who met when working at the Electric Diner on Portobello. An old school style pub that also serves food, we’re looking forward to sampling bar snacks like spiced crab on toast, Red Lemon Scotch eggs (pig’s trotter with mustard mayo and kedgeree with a mango chutney – actually maybe not the pig’s trotter but the kedgeree […]

Spring

It’s been a long while coming but Skye Gyngell’s first solo venture, Spring, will finally open next week in the New Wing of Somerset House. But while the name is a touch out of season, the ingredients promise to be seasonal to the max. All about ‘lucky 8’, (sort of) the menu will comprise eight starters, eight main dishes and five desserts. Opening dishes will include Grilled langoustine with seaweed butter, Roasted turbot with porcini and bone marrow and Fillet of beef with brown butter, anchovy and wild greens.  Desserts feature Buttermilk cream with rye shortbread and damson ice cream […]

London Cocktail Week: Cuervo’s Hacienda

Prior to my evening at the Cuervo’s Hacienda at The Hoxton, I had always associated tequila with hot summers and the beach but I am pleased to say that on this occasion I was proved entirely wrong. Whilst the opening of London Cocktail Week saw a severe drop in temperature, the heat at The Hoxton was palpable with two tequila based cocktails in particular filling the cold spot excellently. In aid of the winter months which as much as we hate to admit are slowly but surely becoming a reality, I was delighted to try the Autumnal Tradicional Sour Margarita […]

Almeida: Review

When it comes to restaurants you think most things have already been covered, we’ve had dining in the dark, mystery menus, eating whilst precariously perched in the sky and way underground, but the Almeida over in Islington have created something brand spanking new; they have done away with the wine list, making them the first restaurant in London to do so. Instead they have a wine wall, where diners can go up and choose their wine based on the tasting notes or they can leave it up to the sommelier to make the choices based on what they are eating […]

Rule Britannia: The Britannia Re-Opens

For someone that spent the majority of their childhood years in Malaysia eating rice and noodles, I do enjoy a good British pub. There is nothing that sums up English life to me more than rounding off a busy week with a Sunday lunch, kicking back with friends and family watching the rest of the world go by. With that in mind, there is no pub more British in spirit than the aptly named Britannia, which has recently re-opened in Kensington. Built on the site of an old brewery, the Britannia is steeped in history and has been serving the […]

The Halloween Ball in WC2

Halloween: the most terrifying night of the year. However, we cannot help but notice in recent years, this holiday (can we call it a holiday), has not been all that scary, What’s more, it is so easy to get wrong and if interpreted incorrectly can end up being cheesier than One Direction and 5 Days of Summer combined. Yes, in the past few years, Halloween has not lived up to its reputation, with blatant attempts of horror and hideous excuses for costumes (adding cat ears is not a costume) taking all the allure out of the evening. What the evening […]

Herman ze German

Note it’s the wurst is coming, not the worst that would be all wrong, as this is the best thing to happen for all lovers of German sausage… ahem. That’s right Herman ze German is back with their third restaurant and this time they are setting up shop on Charlotte Street. Launching next week and the largest yet, it will be able to seat 90 people over two floors, although if you’ve been to either of the other venues (Villiers Street and Old Compton Street) you’ll recognise the white tiles on the counter and the brass mincers decorating the walls. […]

Restaurant at Tate Modern Review

The Evening Standard has described the level 6 restaurant at the Tate Modern as ‘one of the best views in London’ so I knew I would be in for a good time on my review – and then it rained. Luckily for me, despite the weather’s best efforts to dampen my view, the mist didn’t manage to cloud the view of St Paul’s from across the river which is the main attraction. The rest of the skyline was left to my imagination which I reckon on a clear day would be beautiful. Once we were seated and had assigned ourselves […]
