Paul A Young Chocolate Afternoon Tea

Saturday being gloriously hot, I went for a little amble through Hyde Park, around Shepherd’s Market and up Park Lane. Then seeing as the sun can be so draining, my friend and I dropped in at Grosvenor House Hotel, for a spot of afternoon tea, as you do. The Park Room at Grosvenor House is light and airy, we settled down in at a window table and nestled back into the green, plush chairs watching the world go by. A pianist tinkled in the corner, and not once, not twice but thrice did we sing Happy Birthday to various guests. […]

Cocktails at St James Bar: Review

When The Handbook heard that Sofitel St James had recently launched its spring/summer cocktail menu we knew that we just had to go and try it out. So on a Tuesday evening we escaped the bustle of Piccadilly, headed over to the hotel and took a seat in the decadent St James Bar. The bar draws inspiration from Coco Chanel’s 1920’s apartment, with a décor of Shagreen and kinon topped tables, dark hues, French antique gilt chairs and low sofas and dusky lighting. It’s intimate without being overbearing; quiet without it feeling awkward and at 7pm there was of mix […]

The Castle in Tooting Broadway

Popping down to your local pub for a pint takes on a whole new meaning at The Castle in Tooting Broadway, which is unrecognisable after a dramatic refurbishment. Forget the dingy lighting, worn seats and grandma’s garish carpets and make way for a new kind of pub that oozes cool sophistication. Despite being one of Tooting’s oldest pubs, The Castle boasts a vibrant atmosphere with an array of places to enjoy a drink or a bite to eat including an Orangery, stylish garden, pergola and bookable ‘mini castles’. It is not just the building that has undergone a makeover; the […]

Cocobananas

Right now life must be a beach for Charlie Gilkes and Duncan Stirling as they open their sixth Inception Group venue – Cocobananas. Opening just in time for the world cup, Cocobananas, the Brazilian beach shack handily sits next door to their infamous Englishmen’s pizzeria, Bunga Bunga, and will be bringing all the fun of a Latin American beach party to Battersea. Leave behind the grey streets of London and into the vibrantly colourful club, set across two floors it’s decorated with flags, vintage surfboards, palm trees, distressed shutter windows and a reproduction of Rio’s iconic Christ the Redeemer statue. The Shed Spring Menu

Stop the press it seems as if summer might finally be around the corner – people are no longer wearing coats and I have definitely seen by fair share of pasty white knees making an appearance. So to celebrate the end of spring and the changing of the seasons, The Shed in Notting Hill are serving up one final spring menu to celebrate the best of British ingredients. On Saturday 24th May, diners will start with complimentary spring consommé with a wild garlic spiced crackers before a meal full of spring flavours including asparagus, radishes, rabbit and elderflower, including dishes […]

Supersized House

Soho House Group, of the international celeb packed members club fame, has for some time been extending its reach to regular folk with fast food sidelines: Pizza East, Chicken Shop and Dirty Burger. However, these little diffusions are fast becoming a fast food empire and to prove it the Group is opening a supersize resto in Whitechapel on 21st May. Basically we’re talking Chicken Shop and Dirty Burger under one trademark, industrial style roof plus a small menu of healthier Soho House staples. Sat at the counter or communal and individual tables, you’ll be able to feast on rotisserie chicken […]

Vivo: Review

Sometimes it is best to keep things simple. Sometimes you just want good food without the fuss and that is exactly what Vivo are doing over in Islington. So The Handbook headed to the all-day café and bakery to try out the Italian food. We wanted to sit on the roof terrace, a hidden space at the back which would have been beautiful had the sun been shining but the strong winds and chill in the air meant that we settled for downstairs; the upside being that we didn’t have to grapple with our trays of food up the stairs, […]
