Asia de Cuba afternoon tea review

After wandering up and down St Martins Lane dodging the tourists we finally found St Martins Lane Hotel. We should have guessed really that it would be the building with no sign, and neon yellow glass. It’s cool, quirky and unashamed. What we assume were stools in the shape of gold teeth lined the foyer, huge oversized vases stand in the corner and cheeky little gnomes hold up small tables. But we weren’t there to stand and admire the foyer, no we were there for the Cuban afternoon tea at Asia de Cuba. Starting with the cutlery being presented in […]

Brand new venue Far Rockaway, named after the buzzing Queens NY resort of the late Fifties and early Sixties, occupies a 400-capacity space on Shoreditch’s lively Curtain Road. Neon artist Andy Doig has re-interpreted Far Rockaway amusement park’s signage in a new original work using 100 feet of coloured glass requiring 30,000 volts of electricity but artwork […]

Boisdale of Bishopsgate

City stalwart, Boisdale of Bishopsgate opened over a decade ago and the establishment reflects the eclectic and idiosyncratic atmosphere of its sister restaurant in Belgravia with those signature end of Empire style interiors – think dark reds and greens and an extensive collection of paintings and objets d’art – providing a clubbable environment with that inimitable tartan twist. Now, however, in response to our growing love affair with posh fast food, Boisdale of Bishopsgate has launched its brand new Burger & Oyster bar. Diners choose between fillings of Aberdeen Angus beef prime rib, Wild Highland venison and Fillet and bone […]

DRINK at Goat Review

Last week The Handbook made the most of Thursdays being the new Friday nights with a trip to Goat on the Fulham Road, but we didn’t go to dine, well we did sneak in a pizza at the end, no instead we went for cocktails, to DRINK to be precise. The upstairs bar at Goat, DRINK recently relaunched at the end of last month giving it its own entrance to make it a venue in itself. Still in keeping with that New York- Italian feel, the atmosphere is charged but relaxed, sophisticated but informal. It’s all very dark wood, darker […]

The X Factor 2013

Another television programme that has recently been added to my Saturday night roster (already featuring Strictly Come Dancing) is The X Factor. As a fan from the beginning, it is frankly a relief that it is finally back on my screen. Once again, I can sit there and moan about sob stories, pitch issues and vibrato like I’m an expert. Well we can all dream, right? The first live show was broadcast on Saturday, and viewers were given a glimpse into who might become the success stories of this year’s competition. Sharon Osbourne’s team had a tough week, as Shelley […]

Strictly Come Dancing 2013

As the days draw in and the English weather starts to get really yucky, if you’re anything like me, a Saturday night sat glued to the TV with a takeaway and a hot water bottle sounds like heaven. So it’s a good job that the new series of Strictly Come Dancing has arrived. Not only does it give me something to do while I nibble on my poppadoms, it also tends to spark some serious debate between the members of the household. Yes, my mother and I have been known to fall out over this. Strictly has been on our […]

Shimmy London

Shimmy London launches today on the site of the former cherryjam on Porchester Road. Brains behind the new night-spot are Hugo Heathcote and Deji Carr – respectively as Creative and Musical Directors. The duo, part of the team behind the hip LoveBrunch and E.T.A. parties, plan to take the venue back to its legendary ‘noughties’ musical roots. The new club encourages playfulness and eccentricity, with an enchanted wardrobe staircase, Scrabble tiled bar and Magic Far Away Tree theme. Optical illusions and quirky Victorian trinkets are offset by stylish exposed brickwork and staff are smartly attired in Gatsby-eque, flapper or bow-tie […]

UK’s first alcoholic yoghurt

Frozen yoghurt, coconut yoghurt… alcoholic yoghurt was only a matter of time. Gourmet yoghurt producer, The Collective, has created a Raspberry & Amaretto limited edition pot that’s strictly for grown-ups. Tangy, fresh raspberry compote has been spiked with classic Italian almond liqueur in a double layer of intense flavour, all folded through thick and creamy yoghurt. The Collective founders may be chefs from New Zealand but this new flavour is made in Britain using only the best West Country milk. It’s also free from any artificial colours, flavours or preservatives, and suitable for vegetarians or those with gluten-free diets. But […]
