Keeping it Simple at Hot Pink Grill

Hot Pink Grill has a simple menu idea complete with fresh, uncomplicated ingredients and an eco friendly approach to producing the food. Diners pick from a selection of 12 mains, divided into 4 categories; meat, chicken, fish and vegetarian. They then add one of six sides and an option of either Garlic & Herb, BBQ, Spicy Pink or Hot Pink Pesto sauce. When The Handbook checked out the latest addition to the Wimbledon Broadway we selected the Half chicken with Sweet potato fries and Spicy Pink sauce as well as the Halloumi & 7 Veg Stack (grilled halloumi, red/yellow pepper, aubergine, […]

Bibigo Review

We featured Bibigo when it launched back in September last year but have only just gotten round to a proper visit. First impressions? LOTS of Oriental diners which boded extremely well and at 7.30pm on a Friday night the place was heaving with a cool fashion forward crowd (hello super limited edition Kenzo sweater to my left). The menu is as hip and healthy looking as the clientele. We started with a couple of the small dishes to share – Sweet & spicy rice cake (with sweet potatoes and okra glazes with chilli sauce) so much better than a bread […]

Roaring 20s Afternoon Tea at Season

“I’m going to call up Daisy tomorrow and invite her over here to tea.” It’s the moment where Daisy and Great Gatsby first set eyes on each other after several years, afternoon tea at Nick Carraway’s house. And so with London celebrating Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of the infamous book it seems only proper that there is at least one afternoon tea honouring this both poignant, and humorous moment in the book. Step in Harvey Nichols and Season at the Fifth Floor with their opulent ‘Roaring 20s Afternoon Tea’. Gatsby sends flowers to decorate Nick’s house, and whilst his were over […]

Grain Store

Just opened yesterday is Bruno Loubet’s new King’s Cross venture, The Grain Store – influenced by the chef’s extensive travels and the years dedicated to his beloved vegetable patch. Although many dishes have a meat or fish element, the menu gives vegetables equal billing, if not the starring role. Fermented, sprouting, pickled and smoked ingredients feature alongside the fresh and the seasonal. Dishes include Sprouting beans and seeds, miso aubergine, crispy citrus chicken skin, potato wafer Courgette, broad bean and prawn falafel, raita; Vegetable merguez, aromatic vegetables and preserved lemon salad; Chilled lobster ‘Bloody Mary’; Sticky rice, kimchi cabbage and […]

Getting it right at Rack & Ruin

There is one word to describe Rack & Ruin. Epic. The Handbook went down to check it out in the Kitchen Party in Clerkenwell and we came out saying that it was one of the best meals we had ever had. It was so simple but so brilliant. Less is definitely more. The concept is food at its most honest, forget extensive menus, waiters and waitresses this is all about traditional methods of brine soaking and roasting wood smoked meats, and birds.  Understated and rustic, we sat at an old slightly warped wooden table and were brought over a bowl […]

Head Over To Alice’s House

The Alice House in Queens Park is an upmarket pub that is helping to shed the old fashioned image of dingy, derelict pubs where no one under the age of 30 dare enter. It sits on the corner of Salusbury Road a mere 5 minute drive from its sister pub, The Alice House in West Hampstead. Inside are various sofas and dining areas to relax with a spider like mash of wires creating a beautiful lighting fixture covering the ceilings. The food here is simple but exquisite and definitely does not disappoint. The Pea mousse starter was a simple idea […]

Ceviche on the road

Next month in July, Martin Morales’ Ceviche is hitting the road on a ten date pop-up tour bringing Ceviche to every corner of Britain. The Peruvian restaurant began life as a pop-up in London last year before finding a permanent home in Soho in March. The tour, which will be taking in destinations from Edinburgh to Padstow, will give people from across the country the chance to try dishes from Morales’ upcoming book Ceviche Peruvian Kitchen. You can also book one of Martin’s hands-on masterclasses as an add-on where you’ll learn how to make Ceviche’s infamous ‘Don Ceviche’ sea bass. […]
