The Green Room

Behind the National Theatre on the banks of the River Thames, sits a new and in all senses of the word, ethically sourced restaurant. For those of you who are concerned about the (at times negative) impact big restaurants can have on the community, there is no need to fear when you come and dine here. The Green Room is a restaurant with a difference; every inch of this restaurant resonates of the collaboration between the National Theatre and local social enterprise Coin Street Community Builders. From the recycled props from hit shows adorning the tables and the classic plays […]

Shikumen Launches

Shikumen, a new affordable Chinese fine-dining restaurant, has slowly been opening its doors to the public since its opening a few months ago at The Dorsett Hotel on Shepherd’s Bush Green. The name Shikumen is so called after the traditional Shanghai stone house architecture of the 1940s that blended east and west which is reflected in the restaurant’s style. The Handbook popped down to see it for oursevles and found the whole experience was very authentic from the interior design, to the other guests and of course the food, which was aesthetically well-presented and consistent throughout the evening. In the […]

Bricks in the Sky Exhibition Opens

There are enough LEGO bricks to reach from earth to the moon ten times. And professional Lego artist Warren Elsemore is well on his way there (albeit cheating a bit), with his display of London-inspired Lego models 80 metres in the air.   ArcelorMittal Orbit is embracing its inner child this February with a Bricks in the Sky Lego exhibition in its upper viewing platform. The multi-coloured models will include the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Big Ben, Battersea Power Station and The O2, alongside London icons the red bus, the black cab and a red telephone box. […]

Secret Ibiza Party Hits London

It might be the dreariest month of the year (we thought we’d knocked that on the head with Dry-January but, oh no, some joker has now come up with Veg-February) but the guys from Blue Marlin are doing their very best to melt the freeze and bring some Ibiza lovin’ to London. You heard us, the White Isle’s most exclusive party is jetting into the capital in time for LFW, the BAFTAs and the Brit Awards with an all-day extravaganza in the 1000-capacity Banking Hall, decked out by La Maison Des Artistes. The exclusive club in the heart of the […]

The National Portrait Gallery Relaunches Restaurant

Time to get your art on! The National Portrait Gallery is re-launching its Portrait Restaurant this Thursday following a month-long closure for ‘restoration’ – something that every portrait needs from time to time. Culinary director Helena Puolakka (Aubergine, La Tante Claire, Pierre Gagnaire and Skylon) and the restaurant’s head chef Steve Beadle (River Café) have created a new menu celebrating the best of British seasonal produce from land and sea with ingredients showcasing rare breeds such as Middle White pork and Hereford beef. Provenance is key and there’s also Selsey lobster, Dorset snails and Westcombe cheddar. Sample dishes include Ashdown […]

Rio Carnival hits Covent Garden

February is meant to be the ‘fun’ month after the miserable time that was January, but so far the weather has been equally as cold, equally as bleak and we’re not even half way through the month. All of that however is about to change with the Brazil Carnival celebrations.  Yes you might not know it but the Rio Carnival is about to kick off and Guanabara is throwing a whole host of parties. So you can’t afford the time or air fare to get to Brazil, but worry not because starting this Wednesday, the colours, tastes and sounds of […]

‘All loved up’ Afternoon tea review

The most romantic month of the year has begun, depending on your perspective and relationship status of course, so what better time to launch an ‘All Loved Up’ afternoon tea? Skylounge has created a delicious, creamy offering that celebrates all things heart shaped and love related that will leave even the most-staunch Valentine’s opposer feeling sweet. The best of the savoury ‘Aphrodisiac sandwiches’ was the Bruschetta and the Parma ham on white baguette thanks to the dreamy garlic butter it came served with. The emphasis here for good food is all on the sweet section though, with dense fudgey ‘He […]

The alps come to London

When you think of winter you think of white snow covered roof tops, children having snowball fights in the streets and roaring fires. When in reality if you’re lucky in London you might get some brown slush on the side of the road, you’re more likely to get a chunk of ice chucked at you and your central heating will probably pack in. Good thing then Home House is here to rectify that and transport you to an Alpine retreat without you having to even leave London, marvellous. A proper winter is coming to Zone 1 in the form of […]

Look, No Butter Supper Club

Peyton and Byrne’s first supper club of 2015 was billed as ‘a health focused dining experience’ and, while we appreciated a helping hand in our January detox, if we’re being honest we were a bit dubious about the concept of a healthy dinner party. Surely each is the antichrist of the other? But we were to be proven wrong. Creative chef Emma Duggan had done wonders with seasonal ingredients and managed to whip up an imaginative (and filling!) five course menu, featuring a lot of vegetables alongside Cornish mackerel and beautifully tender venison casserole, so it was far from rabbit […]
