Precious

We wouldn't normally suggest you visit a brothel but this is art people so head over to Eleven gallery to see Precious, the new exhibition from brilliant documentary photographer and filmmaker Jane Hilton. It was back in 2000 that she was commissioned by the BBC to make ten documentary films in Nevada brothels such as Madam Kitty's Cathouse and Moonlite Bunnyranch but she returned there three years ago – this time with her plate camera. The trip spawned ‘Precious’, a collection of intimate nude portraits of working girls. Prostitution is actually legal in Nevada though still not socially acceptable and […]

Which is great because right now gin is in.  Low in calories, it is marvellous for everyone who is now gearing up to get […]

The Handbook takes a trip to The Truscott Arms

Last week The Handbook headed over to Maida Vale to try out the Truscott Arms.  Things took a bit of a slow start, it took a while to be served despite the bar being relatively quiet and quite a few staff working.  We were sat up in the restaurant, a large room light, airy room with high ceilings and large sash windows, it will look lovely when the sun is shining and would be brilliant for getting a large group together for a meal or to hire out for a party. Things were a little quiet, and for a while […]

Barbarella heads back to the 80s

A long standing landmark of Fulham Road, Barbarella is going back to its heyday and cooking up an 80s culinary feast. Having been sent a genuine Barberella menu from the 80s, Head Chef Lauren Clement Delbos is recreating several dishes from the Italian inspired menu to mark her appointment. We’re talking 80s classics such as Pollo alla aka Chicken Kiev, trifle and gazpacho and to keep it authentic, the prices are seriously 80s too, a main course of fresh rabbit for £3.20, pate for £1.15. Can’t say no to that! Last week The Handbook headed over to Barbarella to try […]

Sambrooks Brewery & The Cadogan Arms

Last week saw The Handbook head to Sambrooks Brewery in Battersea, one of London’s local microbreweries, and due to celebrate its fifth birthday this year. The owner Duncan kindly showed us around the place, which was a fascinating experience and definitely a treat for any ale lover (tours are available to the public). Sambrooks are dedicated to providing a locally-sourced product, and they find 99% of their ingredients in the UK, the majority of which comes from less than 100 miles away! We also sampled several of the Sambrook ales – they have two constant brews (the original ‘Wandle’ and […]
