Bistrot des Halles

Today sees the second opening from the team behind Knightsbridge’s ritzy Chabrot Bistrot d'Amis – over on the other side of town in east London’s Smithfield. Brainchild of longstanding friends, operations director Yann Chevris, Michelin-starred chef Thierry Laborde and celebrity florist Pascal Lavorel, the new venue will have more of a laid back brasserie in feel than its posher sister restaurant. Known for his elegant yet simple and traditional Southern French bistrot dishes, Laborde has dedicated a large part of the menu to meat – in a nod to the carnivorous heritage of Smithfield Market. Small dishes to start have […]

London’s historic venues

From its roots as a Roman city through to the present day, London has had over 2000 years of building works, architecture and design. Witnessing everything from wooden Tudor houses right through to the Shard via towering Georgian palaces, gothic Victorian mansions and 1930s Art Deco, London encompasses it all. The Handbook has selected some of its favourite historical venues whose architectural design will add to any event. Tower of London When William the Conqueror first started building a massive stone tower on the edge of the Thames in the early 1080s, London had never seen anything like it. Almost a […]

The Handbook takes a trip to The Truscott Arms

Last week The Handbook headed over to Maida Vale to try out the Truscott Arms.  Things took a bit of a slow start, it took a while to be served despite the bar being relatively quiet and quite a few staff working.  We were sat up in the restaurant, a large room light, airy room with high ceilings and large sash windows, it will look lovely when the sun is shining and would be brilliant for getting a large group together for a meal or to hire out for a party. Things were a little quiet, and for a while […]

Barbarella heads back to the 80s

A long standing landmark of Fulham Road, Barbarella is going back to its heyday and cooking up an 80s culinary feast. Having been sent a genuine Barberella menu from the 80s, Head Chef Lauren Clement Delbos is recreating several dishes from the Italian inspired menu to mark her appointment. We’re talking 80s classics such as Pollo alla aka Chicken Kiev, trifle and gazpacho and to keep it authentic, the prices are seriously 80s too, a main course of fresh rabbit for £3.20, pate for £1.15. Can’t say no to that! Last week The Handbook headed over to Barbarella to try […]

Sambrooks Brewery & The Cadogan Arms

Last week saw The Handbook head to Sambrooks Brewery in Battersea, one of London’s local microbreweries, and due to celebrate its fifth birthday this year. The owner Duncan kindly showed us around the place, which was a fascinating experience and definitely a treat for any ale lover (tours are available to the public). Sambrooks are dedicated to providing a locally-sourced product, and they find 99% of their ingredients in the UK, the majority of which comes from less than 100 miles away! We also sampled several of the Sambrook ales – they have two constant brews (the original ‘Wandle’ and […]

Cooking skills are not even necessary to win, all Psy and Bibigo are looking for […]
