Mazes and Mezze at Mezzah Lounge

This week The Handbook went to Harrods to try out Middle Eastern fare in the Mezzah Lounge. Before we get on to how the food was the first thing that we should point out to all those who aren’t that familiar with Harrods, is that it is on the fourth floor, near the lifts, you don’t want to end up as we did going round and round and round the Harrods maze looking for it, of course you don’t let on to this and just pretend you really did want to spend half an hour looking at the luxury linen. Flower Pop at Gaucho Sloane

Argentine cuisine meets the Chelsea Flower Show in Gaucho Sloane’s special Botanical Menu, created with a nod to Britain’s most floral festivities. From flower-themed cocktails to petal salads, The Handbook reviews this gardener’s feast. Beginning with cocktails, the Rose Martini arrived with yellow flowers sprinkled on its surface. This was rather a pity as the cocktail became difficult to drink without chewing on petals. The Turkish delight taste was good, but a little overpowering. However, weaknesses on this side were compensated for by the brilliant Pommelina cocktail, a mix of vodka and citrus fruits that was possibly the best we’ve […]

The Elgin – Maida Vale

You don’t particularly notice the décor at The Elgin, which is a good sign; this pub/restaurant is all about the food and service, which is outstanding. It’s not a pub in a traditional sense – you walk straight into a bright, airy and bare-bricked room, with sturdy wooden tables featuring the standard flickering candle. If I was asked what The Elgin looked like, I’d say ‘lots of wood’, which isn’t the most descriptive of phrases, but probably sums it up. This Maida Vale bar and grill is the sort where regular diners are greeted like old friends, and the service […]
